Orihuela’s Councillor for Sports, Víctor Sigüenza, announced the upcoming 16th Classical Olympics of the Vega Baja and Baix Vinalopó this morning. He was joined by M. Pilar Olmos, Greek teacher and director at IES El Palmeral, and Ángela Vegara, the vice-principal of the host school. As M. Pilar Olmos explained, “For the past 18 years, a group of Latin and Greek teachers from across the province of Alicante — including several from the Vega Baja region and two from Elche — have been organizing this interdisciplinary activity to promote the classical languages. It’s a long-standing educational adventure that we carry out together with Physical Education teachers.” This year’s edition will take place on April 10, with IES El Palmeral serving as the host. Students from various schools will compete in athletic events inspired by the ancient Olympic Games once held in the sacred grounds dedicated to Zeus. The day will also include the performance of a classical theatre piece. Participating schools come from the municipalities of Elche, Catral, Callosa, Albatera, Rojales, and the host school in Orihuela. The event will begin with a pentathlon at the “Los Arcos” football field, featuring disciplines such as endurance, shot put, javelin throw, sprinting, and relay races. After a communal lunch, students and teachers will attend a theatrical performance of The Birds by Aristophanes, staged at the Atanasio Die Theater Circus by the Greco-Roman theatre group “Caligae Teatro.” Vice-principal Ángela Vegara expressed pride in hosting the event, thanking the Orihuela City Council — particularly the Departments of Sports and Culture — as well as sponsors Telfy and Syon, and the dedicated teaching staff. “This is a multidisciplinary activity that requires coordination among all participating schools. The real stars are the students, who take part with enthusiasm and joy in a variety of athletic challenges.” Councillor Víctor Sigüenza concluded by praising the efforts of IES El Palmeral, highlighting the City Council’s continued support. “We’re committed to initiatives like this that promote sport and camaraderie among young people. It’s a pleasure to welcome the Classical Olympics back to Orihuela.”
