International stars who are part of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) are on their way home after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a one-week suspension of the tournament.
According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, the IPL teams have begun disbanding, with players leaving for their own destinations, and overseas players have started to take flights for their countries. The majority of the international players are expected to exit India by Saturday.
Earlier on Friday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia was asked if players and support staff from abroad had been given the option to return home if they felt uncomfortable, he had told Reuters: “That’s not our domain. It’s for the individual franchises to decide what they want to do with their foreign recruits.”
The report also adds that Southern Indian cities like Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad are being shortlisted to host the 16 remaining matches if IPL 2025 resumes in May. Resumption of the tournament will have to be in consultation with the Indian government.

Even if the tournament is resumed, be it in May or later in the year, the BCCI are mindful of the difficulties regarding the logistics, especially getting the overseas players to return to India.

As per the report, franchises are unsure if their foreign contingent would come back to the country if the IPL 2025 season is played again after the scheduled end of the tournament, with the final originally scheduled for May 25.
Prior commitments for the players from Australia and South Africa for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, to be held at Lord’s starting June 11.
The BCCI would want to look at a vacant period after the upcoming Indian Test tour of England, set to begin in June and end in August, later this year.
Another massive concern is the remaining fixtures in the calendar, particularly the Asia Cup in September, which looks to be under threat, considering that India are supposedly meant to be the hosts.
