Party time for Kilmarnock Rugby Club as they seal first league title in 30 years
@Source: dailyrecord.co.uk
Kilmarnock lifted their first league trophy in 30 years as they sealed the West Region League Division One title in emphatic fashion, writes Riordan Craig. A 63-19 win away to Annan on Saturday took them over the line in the game’s final season and secured promotion to the National set-up next term. The Bellsland outfit will be plying their trade in National League Division Four after the summer break. Heading into the clash, the equation was simple - pick up a single point. And the made sure of that as they raced out of the blocks to tally the necessary four tries in rapid fashion, eventually leading 44-7 at the break. The contest was much more even after the interval but Killie had already wrapped up the title by that point. They got on the scoresheet early and often with William Farquhar breaking through to give the visitors the lead before adding a second soon after. The tries kept coming. However, this time it was Annan who scored as they reduced the deficit to 12-7 with their first point. Kilmarnock quickly restored their advantage through Calum Smith while Scott McDowall had the honour of officially sealing the title when he bagged the club’s fourth try - and ensured the bonus point that took them over the line. There was still time for a further four tries before the half-time interval as Killie ran riot. Gregor Paxton broke through the home defence to score before Farquhar was denied a hat-trick when the referee pulled play back for a scrum - with McDowall barging over moments later. Ross Murray and Connor Turnbull got in on the act as the visitors boasted a 37-point lead when the half-time whistle blew. Calum Smith’s try early in the second half took his side above the 50-point mark for a staggering ninth time this season. Annan restored some pride with a pair of tries to reduce the deficit to 51-19 but it was fittingly Killie who would have the last say on their way to the title. Curran McMillan managed to break through the home defence to increase Killie’s lead once more before Turnbull got on the end of a kick towards the Annan tryline to complete the scoring and the title-winning season. The post-match huddle saw the players take the knee and coach MacKenzie Pearce opened by saying they’ll ‘remember this moment’ and they’ve ‘done it for the club.’ Coach Stuart Pratt added that 1995 was the ‘last time the club won the league’ and they’ve ‘wiped the slate clean’ as the club return to the National League next term.
