The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) on Friday listed major accomplishments since its inception to include: “Over $800 million in combined private and public investment attracted to the initiative, creation of more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs across the country; and acceleration of the adoption of cleaner, more affordable energy alternatives—with more than 100,000 CNG vehicles now operating nationwide, representing a fivefold increase within one year.
The PCNGI gave the information while reacting to an article published by a major online news medium, denouncing the report as “unprofessional and misleading” and accusing the outlet of relying on conjecture and factual misrepresentation.
In a statement signed by Matilda Johnson, Brand & Corporate Communications Manager for PCNGI, the agency described the article as departing from ethical standards of journalism by attacking a program that has made substantial national impact.
Johnson said one of the most notable milestones of the PCNGI is also the recent deployment by Dangote Group’s 4,000 CNG-powered trucks, 100 virtual pipeline vehicles, Multiple new daughter stations to bolster gas distribution.
According to the statement, additionally, PCNGI’s collaboration with local MSMEs has fueled growth in the CNG conversion sector, stressing that the number of operational conversion centers has surged from just 7 at the program’s start to over 300 nationwide, with 20 new centers opening weekly.
The agency asserted that its website is currently undergoing scheduled updates, aimed at publishing a more extensive and inclusive list of newly approved centers, reflecting PCNGI’s commitment to transparency.
The release also refuted allegations regarding Mr. David Idakwo, clarifying that he is a mid-level field officer hired in late 2024, without any executive or decision-making role within PCNGI.
Attributing nepotism based on his prior private enterprise experience, the statement said, is both misleading and an affront to fair business opportunity for all Nigerians.
Reaffirming its dedication to public accountability, the PCNGI suggested that ongoing reforms and integrity measures may have discouraged individuals with vested interests, potentially fueling hostile coverage.
The initiative urged news outlets to adhere to “the core ethics of journalism: fairness, objectivity, and factual accuracy.”
PCNGI said it welcomes constructive criticism but opposes misrepresentation and sensationalism, emphasizing the nation’s need for journalism that “builds, not destroys.”
