A pensioner has been fined in court after a bizarre ‘hit and run’ at roadworks in Ramelton. The incident happened at Fawninoughan, Ramelton, on January 29th, 2024 when road worker Alexander Hutchinson was operating a stop/go system for traffic. A driver edged his way towards Mr Hutchinson and failed to stop despite being signalled to resulting in Mr Hutchinson being struck on the leg. The driver asked to see the injury but then drove off. Pensioner Thomas Alcorn, 74, appeared at Letterkenny District Court where he was charged with a number of offences including careless driving and hit and run. The court heard Alcorn, of Longhill, Ramelton, was taking his two grandsons to the mart that day. Evidence was heard that Alcorn’s black Volkswagen Golf car stopped at the roadworks but then edged forward striking Mr Hutchinson in the leg as the injured man and a co-worker jumped out of the way. The accused got out of his car and demanded to see the injury caused to Mr Hutchinson’s leg before jumping back in his car and driving on to the mart in Stranorlar. Mr Hutchinson attended Letterkenny University Hospital where he was treated for a soft tissue injury. Gardai interviewed Alcorn and he said that he had not seen the workman and had hit him by accident. Solicitor for Alcorn, Mr Frank Dorrian, told the court that his client has never come before the court before and had no previous convictions of any kind. He said that on the day his client approached the junction where the traffic management was but that the sun had been shining in his eyes. He had stopped and asked Mr Hutchinson to see his leg and the injury before proceeding on his way to the mart, added Mr Dorrian. He described the incident as a “misunderstanding” and added that it was “unfortunate and unintentional.” Judge Eiteain Cunningham fined Alcorn €250 and said that because the accused had no previous convictions she would not impose a driving disqualification.
