Pep Guardiola fumes after Premier League deny Man City FA Cup request
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
Angry Pep Guardiola has questioned why the Premier League could not be as accommodating with Manchester City as they have with other English teams in finals. The Blues face Crystal Palace at Wembley in one of the most glamorous fixtures in English football, but will also be in action three days later fighting for the most lucrative games. City were originally meant to be playing Bournemouth at home this weekend in their penultimate Premier League fixture in a game that was scheduled to be played on a Sunday night. This was to preserve the importance of the FA Cup , with a decision taken that not only would there be no games played on the Saturday but the Friday night would also be kept clear of league matches. That changed when Chelsea and Manchester United were allowed to move their game to the Friday, and once Spurs reached the Europa League final a decision was made to play their match against Villa on the same night to give both finalists the same amount of recovery before Wednesday's final. Guardiola has no problem with that call but has a long history of the FA and Premier League refusing similar requests from the Blues during his nine seasons at the club. They were particularly annoyed last season when they had to play an FA Cup semi-final on the Saturday after a tough Champions League quarter-final on the Wednesday - the fourth year in a row they have been given that schedule - when all the other semi-finalists had no midweek game. This year, Guardiola said he would 'definitely' rather have extra rest before facing Bournemouth on Tuesday night but that a Wednesday fixture that ran alongside the Europa League final had not been allowed. City's manager appeared to suggest he would be unable to pick players for two games in four days that he otherwise would have used as he highlighted the double standards. "Tottenham Hotspur play against Aston Villa on Friday ahead of the Europa League final. Good decision, I’m not being sarcastic," he said. "The Premier League made a good decision, very good. We played all the time in [Champions League] quarter-finals on Wednesday away - and we play [FA Cup semi-finals] on Saturday. "This season we didn’t play, we played Sunday. We didn’t need that day extra when we played in that position. "People say it is for broadcasters, more fans or followers and the other things. The previous year they had more followers on the other game, not our game. They are tired to see us. "I would prefer to play Wednesday, definitely. It will be tough. We have been nine years fighting against these situations, every single season and nothing goes. "We are going to play Tuesday night against a most intense and physical and direct and powerful (team) in the Premier League like Bournemouth, who are playing for the Europa League or Conference qualification. So we have to deal with that. "United and Tottenham play on Friday and when it is possible, this is what we should do. I won’t change much whether it’s Tuesday or Wednesday. They decide that we play on Tuesday without people." --- Here at the Manchester Evening News, we’re dedicated to bringing you the best Manchester City coverage and analysis.
