Peter O’Mahony thanks Murrayfield crowd for ‘biggest compliment’ after boos in Ireland’s Six Nations win vs Scotland

PANTOMIME villain Peter O’Mahony has thanked Scottish fans for booing him on Sunday.
O’Mahony was not involved against England but was handed a recall by Simon Easterby for Ireland’s second Six Nations fixture.
And he admitted that he particularly relishes facing Scotland, owing to an old rivalry between Munster and Glasgow.
The home fans showed that the dislike was mutual when he was jeered when he was replaced in the second half but he took that as a compliment.
O’Mahony said: "I don't know what it is. It's competitive, we've had the Glasgow thing for a long time.
"Every time it's a battle and I think someone said I got a fairly savage boo when I came off, which is potentially one of the biggest compliments of my career of 111 Test matches!
“I didn’t hear it at the time but I’ll take it. So, thanks Murrayfield!”
And the 35-year-old had the last laugh with Ireland comfortable 32-18 winners with O’Mahony always feeling like the visitors were in control.
He said: "I thought we had a really good first half, first 10, 15 minutes. We spoke about our start and we spoke about it afterwards, we felt like we were all over them. So I enjoyed that, I have to say.
“I know we weren't down the line with the scoreboard but we knew we were on top, we knew we were playing well, we had a couple of things to sort out but we didn't feel like, 'aw, we missed that chance'.
“We backed up a couple of penalties which isn't something we want to do.
"We don't want to concede and it was a bad time to concede just before half-time but at the same time we still felt in control. We knew we needed to get out of that penalty-penalty thing.
"To be fair, though, the second one was off a scrum line break, we covered back really, really well.
"I know Robbie Henshaw got his hand in and it ended up being a scrum and they got a penalty off it but on other days that could have been seven points if it wasn't for the effort of some of the guys getting back.
"So that gives you a lift. I was saying under the posts, 'lads, that should have been seven and it was only three'. That gives you a big lift, the effort the lads made to get back.”
Moments like that help convince O’Mahony that a history-making third successive Six Nations title could be on the cards, although he knows things could easily go awry.
He said: "I sense that this is a good group and if we put our minds to it, if we stay on top of the stuff that we talk about, we can put in some very, very good performances.
"We're tough to beat but as soon as you switch off you're under pressure. So you've got to be all over it for the majority of the game.
"We know what's at stake but you get ahead of things and something goes wrong.
"We have a few days off, back in the camp, and we've a big lead into another big game against Wales in the Millennium Stadium.”
But the chance to do something unprecedented is why he is so keen to stay involved in the twilight of his career.
He said: “Look, I'm like a broken record I'd say when I'm picked for Ireland but I loved that, I have to say. Loved it.
"Everyone who plays professional rugby in Ireland wants to play for Ireland. All the kids want to play for Ireland, even more so now because every time they turn on the TV we're winning, you know?
"If you ask any of my generation who they followed, it was all the teams that won, so everyone wants to play for Ireland.
"It's no different for me or my youngest fella or my middle fella, they all want to play for Ireland.
"So I'm delighted I got the chance to put on the jersey and put in a performance like that.”
