PGA Tour Sees Ratings Spike at Genesis Invitational Despite Tiger Woods WD
@Source: newsweek.com
One of the first signature events on the 2025 PGA Tour calendar didn't disappoint as the Genesis Invitational came down to the final hole last Sunday at Torrey Pines.Even after Tiger Woods withdrew following his mother's passing, there was plenty for golf fans to focus on throughout the four days.CBS saw a ratings spike during Sunday's final round even without Woods in the field, according to Josh Carpenter of Sports Business Journal."Golf viewership: CBS draws 3.4M viewers for Ludvig Aberg's win in the Genesis Invitational, up 5% from 3.2M last year," Carpenter reported on X.That 3.4 million number also makes the final round at Torrey Pines the most-watched round outside of the four majors since the 2024 Players Championship.There was plenty for golf fans to latch onto all day on Sunday. American Maverick McNealy generated some Ryder Cup buzz for himself with eight birdies in his first 11 holes to take an early lead. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler also started his round hot to get back in contention, turning the leaderboard into one packed with big names.By the end of the day, all eyes were on Aberg as he tried to secure his biggest career PGA title. The Swedish prodigy was shaky on the front nine, following up back-to-back birdies on the second and third holes with a pair of bogeys to bring him back to even par for the round.Aberg collected himself and birdied five of his next 11 holes, including three in a row on 13, 14 and 15, to soar back to the top of the leaderboard. With McNealy already in the clubhouse, Aberg crushed his second shot to the back of the green on the par-5 18th and two-putted for a winning birdie at the last.If Aberg, Scheffler and the rest of the stars of the PGA Tour keep contending on Sundays at big events, expect more of these big ratings days in the near future.More Golf: PGA Tour Veteran Left in Tears Amid Arnold Palmer Invitational Exemption
