PNG Lewas shot down in opener

THE PNG Lewas campaign in the Pacific Aus Sports Cricket Invitational has hit a snag in their first-up match against the Australian Indigenous side. The PNG side -that was recently given One Day International (ODI) status – were humbled by the Aussies with a rude wake-up call as they lost by eight wickets at the Amini Park in Port Moresby. PNG set 108/6 (20 overs) was easily surpassed by the Indigenous side 109/2 off 18 overs. PNG winning the toss elected to bat with openers Naomi Vere 9 (15) and Melanie Ani 0 (3) falling cheaply. Lewas skipper Brenda Tau 46 (46) coming at first-drop took matters in her own hands with Henao Thomas 18 (32) for a positive third wicket stand. Only Konio Pala 13 was the only other batswoman to reach double figures, while the rest (Pauke Siaka 0, Lakshmi Rajadura 3, Holland Doriga 6) failed miserably. Tau’s innings was the only standout worth noting. The visitors in reply, had the measure of the Lewas bowling attack with opener Anika Learoyd putting on a player of the match performance with her slashing 62 runs (not out) off 57 balls performance. Learoyd virtually toyed with the Lewas bowlers in an innings that included eight 4s. Mikayla Hinkley played the supporting role with 31 runs (28) not out. Tau, said their bowlers need to work really hard on improving if they are to bounce back. “We know where we need to work on as a team, and hopefully we come back stronger the next time.” The other match between Samoa and Vanuatu was abandoned due to rain.
