Prince William is showing his support for England’s women’s soccer team in Switzerland. Just hours after he and his wife, Kate Middleton, helped host French President Emmanuel Macron for the first day of his state visit to the U.K., the Prince of Wales, 43, traveled to Zurich on Wednesday, July 9. William watched England, known as the Lionesses, take on the Netherlands in the women’s Euro 2025 competition. The England team, who are the reigning champions of Europe, lost their first game of the tournament 2-1 to France. So, it was timely that the prince, who is patron of the governing organization of the game in England, was there to cheer them on. Prince William will surely have to report every detail of the match to his three children — Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7 — who have taken up their dad's devotion to the sport of soccer. When he visited the women's team in 2022, William was gifted personalized jerseys for his three children. Charlotte, in particular, has been following the Lionesses. During the 2022 Women’s World Cup, the young princess joined her dad in a video wishing the team well by saying, "Good luck, I hope you win. Bye!" Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? Princess Charlotte also had her father relay a message to the squad when he visited them in 2022. He told the women, "Charlotte wanted me to tell you that she is really good at goal. She said, 'Please tell them that.' She's a budding star for the future." On June 30, Prince William reacquainted himself with the Lionesses as he spent some time with the squad, and he officially gave the players their jerseys before they headed off to the tournament. At their training center, he spoke with several players and their families, hearing how they’re gearing up for the tournament. Encouraging the grassroots sector of the sport, Prince William also took part in a Made for This Game session with junior girls’ teams, joining former Lionesses Rachel Brown-Finnis and Kerry Davis as they cheered on the next generation. The Prince of Wales has had an action-packed season cheering on his favorite club, Aston Villa, often with Prince George by his side. They had a standout year, making a strong run in the Champions League. William followed the action closely, traveling to Monaco with friends and to Paris with George to watch the team compete on the European stage. The trip abroad came after Prince William and Princess Kate, 43, joined King Charles — and celebrity guests including Kristin Scott Thomas, Elton John and Mick Jagger — at a magnificent state banquet at Windsor Castle in honor of Macron and his wife, Brigitte.
