New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips opened up on his recent performances in ODI cricket. Since arriving in Pakistan, the all-rounder has been in stellar form scoring 215 runs in four games which includes a quickfire fifty against the hosts in Kiwis’ opening game at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Phillips’ power-packed innings played a big role as New Zealand went on to secure their first win in the group stage by taking a 60-run win over Pakistan in Karachi. After the win, the all-rounder explained the things that have worked for him in ODI cricket. “I’m just really clear at the moment, I’m seeing the ball well and I guess being still at the point of contact. I think that goes a long way in being able to be a hitter,” he said, as per ESPNCricinfo. Batting first at Karachi, the Kiwis put up a mammoth 320/5 total with centuries from Will Young and Tom Latham. But Phillips also had his moments with the bat towards the end of the first innings, scoring a quick 39-ball 61. He smashed three boundaries and four sixes before losing his wicket to Haris Rauf. In the previous three games of the Pakistan Tri-Nation Series 2025, the 28-year-old had unbeaten scores of 106, 28 and 20. Phillips explained why New Zealand batters were held back before his partnership with Tom Latham.“I think we’ve played a different pitch and it’s played a different way every time we’ve been here [Karachi],” he said. “The pacers I think were harder to play in the day when the ball was going up and down a lot,” he added. The all-rounder also credited Pakistan’s bowlers who proved to be a challenge in the early stages of the first innings in the Champions Trophy opener. “I think during the day the way the Pakistan boys bowled, especially at the top, made it quite tough for us to get away early on,” Phillips noted. “I think we’ve been adaptable to different styles of pitches, and it was nice to see some turn out there in the evening,” he concluded. New Zealand are next scheduled to play Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on February 24. Their final group match will be against India on March 2. The Black Caps must continue to adapt in their remaining fixtures to make the semi-final stage. They have already made a solid start in that direction.
