Rashee Rice has been slammed with jail time over a 2024 high-speed car crash.
Rashee Rice has been caught in the cross hairs of the legal hammer.
On Thursday July 17, a Dallas County court dealt a sobering reminder that fame carries responsibilities.
In connection with a March 30, 2024, high‑speed crash in Dallas, the 25‑year‑old Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver and member of the Super Bowl‑winning 2023 squad, pled guilty to two third‑degree felonies.
AP reports that the felonies include racing on a highway causing bodily injury and collision involving serious bodily injury—resulting in a sentence of five years’ deferred probation, 30 days’ imprisonment, and over $115,000 in restitution to his victims.
What Happened?
Video evidence shows Rice behind the wheel of a 2020 Lamborghini Urus, travelling at an estimated 119 mph, weaving aggressively before triggering a chain‑reaction collision involving multiple vehicles.
Two occupants of the vehicles were hospitalised.
Instead of remaining to assist, Rice fled the scene on foot—which drew staunch criticism from Dallas District Attorney John Creuzot.
He reminded the public that, “A vehicle in the wrong hands can be as dangerous as any weapon” and that Rice was “fortunate to have walked away unharmed”.
Rice issues apology ahead of the NFL’s disciplinary action
Rice’s legal team has labelled the incident a “youthful indiscretion” and framed the plea deal—complete with deferred adjudication—as a second chance.
If he remains compliant over five years and completes 60 hours of community service, the charges could ultimately be dismissed.
The Chiefs wide receiver said in a statement as per TMZ:
“I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property...I fully apologise for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families.”
Despite this apology, the NFL has signalled that disciplinary action is imminent.
League officials confirmed they are “closely monitoring all developments,” and commentators widely expect a multi‑game suspension under the personal conduct policy.
