For his tournament-topping performance for Trinidad and Tobago at the 2025 Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship (Hoerman Cup), Chris Richards Jr is the Daily Express Star of the Month for July. Richards Jr was crowned Best Individual Player of the annual regional tournament and played a key role in helping the men’s team to third place when action concluded at the Barbados Golf Club in Christ Church on July 4. The men’s team, comprising Richards Jr, team captain Liam Bryden, Gabriel Vanososte and Ryan Gomez, finished the tournament with a score of 28 over par, behind eventual winners Puerto Rico (+18) and silver medallists Dominican Republic (+27). Jamaica (875), Bahamas (912), and the Cayman Islands (943) were fourth to sixth respectively, while Barbados and the USA did not finish the course. For Richards Jr, it was a childhood dream that was realised. “It was kind of one of my biggest goals in life, to win that honour. That is basically a milestone,” said Richards Jr. Richards gave a standout performance to cop the tourney’s best individual performer, finishing one under par over three days. Top scores for T&T in the third and final round came from Bryden (68), Richards Jr (69), Vanososte (75) and Gomez (77). Richards Jr reasoned that his knowledge of the course at the Barbados Golf Club in Durant, Barbados, made it possible for him to navigate the course with such deft skill. “Obviously, Barbados Golf Club is a kind of course that is known to us. We have played there several times before and it is pretty similar to Tobago (the Plantations Golf Course in Lowlands) also, so it wasn’t too much of a big adjustment,” Richards Jr said. He added that the conditions were similar between those two courses, including strong crosswinds, the tightness of the fairway, the hazards and the similar design. To date in 2025 , Richards Jr said he had been having a pretty decent season. “It has been rough in the sense of the amount of hard work that I have put in to prepare. But that hard work is paying off,” said TTO’s top amateur golfer. With the Hoerman Cup out of the way, Richards Jr is focused on returning to his USA base at Webber International University in Babson Park, Florida, where he will be committed to collegiate competitions for the rest of the year. Richards Jr’s accomplishment edged out TTO’s men’s junior cycling sprint team for the monthly honour. At the 2025 Junior Pan American Cycling Championships, Trinidad and Tobago secured a gold medal in the team sprint event. The team, consisting of Judah Neverson, Jelani Nedd and Javon Ramroop, achieved a time of 46.061 seconds, breaking the national record, in a performance highlighted by their parent body, Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation.
