TV presenter Roman Kemp has revealed he is grappling with a little-known disability that causes him significant stress. The One Show host disclosed his struggle with dyscalculia, a specific condition affecting a person's ability to comprehend numbers and mathematical concepts. During the latest episode of his podcast You About?, which he co-hosts with singer Tom Grennan , the duo discussed their personal lives and methods they use to decrease stress. Despite not being a big spender, Roman confessed that checking his bank account is one of his biggest stresses . He also shared that his preferred method of relaxation is using a lavender-scented eye mask. The star explained how his stress stems from his dyscalculia: "I think it's because I've got that f*****g dyscalculia stuff." He further explained how the condition impacts him: "When I think about numbers, the numbers jumble up in the air for me and I can't see it." Roman, son of actor and singer Martin Kemp, added: "It just feels like someone's throwing them up in the air and it's scrambling everything. That's exactly how I feel about numbers. And so it really, really stresses me out." According to the British Dyslexic Association, dyscalculia affects approximately 5 to 6% of people in the UK, equating to around four million individuals nationwide. According to the National Numeracy Charity: "Dyscalculia is a specific and persistent difficulty in understanding numbers which can lead to a diverse range of difficulties with mathematics. It will be unexpected in relation to age, level of education and experience and occurs across all ages and abilities." Earlier in the podcast, Roman also revealed how his "diary" causes him stress, admitting that he'll only ever check it "the day before" he is due to do something. Beyond discussing his battles with dyscalculia, Roman has emerged as one of broadcasting's most familiar faces in recent years. Following his start at Capital Radio, he departed the programme last year after seven years presenting its breakfast show. He has since made the switch from radio to television, regularly appearing with the likes of Alex Jones, Ronan Keating and Lauren Laverne on the One Show sofa. However, one of his earliest TV appearances saw him secure third place in I'm A Celebrity back in 2019, before Jacqueline Jossa claimed victory. More recently, he also represented England team in this year's Soccer Aid. Many will also recognise Roman from his powerful documentaries exploring mental health, including the 2021 BBC release Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency. He is also set to announce a new country-wide mental health initiative in August.
