Rory McIlroy Gives Blunt Explanation for Why He Ignored Bryson DeChambeau During Masters

Rory McIlroy is speaking out about not speaking to Bryson DeChambeau during the final round at Augusta National last month.
“I don’t know what he was expecting,” McIlroy, 36, told reporters on Wednesday, May 14 in advance of the PGA Championship. “We’re trying to win the Masters. I’m not going to try to be his best mate out there.”
The golfers were paired together during the final round of the major, with DeChambeau fading along the final stretch to finish tied for fifth.
But after the tournament, it was the 31-year-old LIV golfer’s comments about McIlroy that raised eyebrows.
“[He] didn’t talk to me once all day,” DeChambeau said at the time. “He wouldn’t talk to me.”
On Thursday, the Irish golfer gave further insight as to why.
“Look, everyone approaches the game different ways,” the five-time majors champion said. “Yeah, like I was focused on myself and what I needed to do. That’s really all that it was. It wasn’t anything against him or against — it’s just I felt that’s what I needed to do to try to get the best out of myself that day.”

For McIlroy — who relied on the services of a sports psychologist to conquer the mountain of winning golf’s Grand Slam — the moment of victory was a long time coming, and an emotional one.
After his 4-foot putt went in during the one-hole playoff against Justin Rose, McIlroy threw his golf club in the air and collapsed to the ground.
"I have achieved everything that I've wanted," McIlroy said on Wednesday. "I've done everything I've wanted to do in the game. I dreamed as a child of becoming the best player in the world and winning all the majors. I've done that. Everything beyond this, for however long I decide to play the game competitively, is a bonus."
McIlroy tees off on Thursday at Quail Hollow — where he’s won four times — and will compete along with DeChambeau and others as a favorite to win the Wanamaker Trophy this weekend.
