Rory McIlroy makes fresh call on Saudi merger as PGA Tour-LIV Golf talks drag on

Rory McIlroy has weighed in on the stalled talks between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). The LIV Golf back Saudi league has been locked in talks with the world's number one tour for over a year regarding a potential merger. And McIlroy admitted he supports the idea of reunifying the sport long-term, but he believes there’s no need to rush into a deal right now. He pointed to the PGA Tour’s strong position - with rising TV ratings sky rocketing in the 2025 season. The five-time major winner was speaking on Jimmy Fallon's US tv show earlier this week after he beat Justin Rose in a one-hole play-off at Augusta National Golf Club last month to clinch the career Grand Slam. He said: "I believe that a deal to bring everyone back together would ultimately be beneficial for the world of golf." "I think the longer that you have the best players only playing together four times a year, long-term, it's detrimental to the game as a whole." "But at the same time, I look at the momentum that the PGA Tour has this year. "TV ratings are up again and their best players are winning and creating these storylines." "I don't necessarily think the PGA Tour needs to do a deal right this minute. "But long-term, for the health of the professional game, the two sides at some point need to come back together." For example, this year's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am - which McIlory won - saw a 47% increase from last year with 3.33 million on CBS. Earlier this year, the PGA Tour turned down a $1.5 billion investment offer from PIF. It was reported that is came with conditions like continuing LIV Golf’s operation and naming PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan as co-chair of PGA Tour Enterprises. Despite the talks stalling McIlroy remains hopeful that both sides will find common ground in future for the overall benefit of professional golf.
