Rory McIlroy makes rare comment on family life with Erica Stoll and daughter

Pro golfer Rory McIlroy has opened up about the struggle to balance his career with family life.
Rory achieved a career milestone after finally winning the Masters this year, earning him the grand slam and the coveted green jacket. He is one of only six male golfers to achieve this, plus the only European golfer to do so.
However, that level of success comes at a cost. Time spent away from family must be hard, and the Northern Irishman opened up about the toll his career takes.
"It's always nice to get home. I feel like I live two different lives. I'm a dad and a husband when I'm away from here, and then I'm who I am when I'm here. It's always nice to get away and feel a bit of normality," he said at the US Open, per Belfast Live.
Rory met his wife Erica Stoll at the 2012 Ryder World Cup. Erica was a PGA employee at the time and after Rory slept in, she helped him get to the course when he was running late.
The pair were friends first, before things turned romantic in 2015. After a beautiful Parisian engagement, the pair tied the knot in 2017 in a star-studded ceremony in Ashford Castle, Co. Mayo.
The couple welcomed a daughter called Poppy back in 2020, and she was recently seen on the Masters golf course with Rory, who helped her practice her putting.
The family will be moving from their US home in the golfing community of Jupiter in Florida to a mansion on the Wentworth estate in Surrey. Rory will also be heading back home to Northern Ireland soon.
"I'm looking forward to just getting back to Europe in general. Obviously, I've got one more week over here. Play Hartford next week. Yeah, we've got a lot to look forward to, got our new house in London, play the Scottish and then obviously The Open at Portrush."
He reflected on playing an Open at Portrush a few years prior: "It will be my first time sort of in public back home after winning the Masters. It should be a really nice week.
"I didn't realise how emotional I was going to be at Portrush. I think that was a thing I was unprepared for more than anything else. I remember I hit a shot into 12 or 13 Friday night, obviously trying to make the cut.
"I remember the roar I got when the ball hit the green, and I felt like I was about to burst into tears. Just that support and that love from your own people. So I was unprepared for that. I need to just get myself in the right frame of mind to feel those feelings again."
