Rory McIlroy is a legend on the PGA Tour. But that does not mean he is not a stalwart over on the European circuit, despite not playing over there much. The Genesis Scottish Open announced on Wednesday that Rory McIlroy will return to the event in 2025. This will be the Northern Irishman's 10th career appearance at the event.McIlroy won the Scottish Open in 2023 and finished tied for fourth in 2024. In announcing his commitment to the 2025 edition, he spoke of the importance of the event to him."Winning a national open is always special, and I'm pleased to have the chance to compete for another Genesis Scottish Open title," McIlroy said, according to the DP World Tour official website."It has certainly been a memorable year so far, and I'm looking forward to carrying on the momentum to the home of golf this summer."The Genesis Scottish Open will once again be played at the Renaissance Club, which has been its home since 2019. It will also be the tournament that precedes The Open Championship, the final major championship of the season. The list of Scottish Open winners includes McIlroy, Xander Schauffele (2022), Min Woo Lee (2021), Rickie Fowler (2015), Justin Rose (2014), Phil Mickelson (2013) and Luke Donald (2011). The tournament has been part of the DP World Tour's Rolex Series since 2017, and has been co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour since 2022.McIlroy won in 2023 with a 15-under total, one stroke ahead of Robert MacIntyre. The following year, MacIntyre became the first Scot to win his National Open since Colin Montgomerie in 1999.Speaking of national opens, McIlroy's win at The Renaissance was his eighth victory in this kind of tournament:
US Open (major): 2011
Hong Kong Open: 2011
Australian Open: 2013
The Open Championship (major): 2014
Irish Open: 2016
Canadian Open: 2019 and 2022
Scottish Open: 2023
He is also the only player ever to have won the Irish Open, the Scottish Open and The Open Championship. This puts him on track to chase another interesting career record, that of 11 different national Opens won by South African legend Bobby Locke. The four-time Open champion won the national opens of South Africa, France, Mexico, Egypt, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Great Britain (The Open Championship).McIlroy just completed the greatest feat a professional golfer can aspire to in his career, the Grand Slam of golf, when he won the 2025 Masters Tournament. It was McIlroy's third victory of the season, 29th of his PGA Tour career and 44th of his professional career.More Golf: Max Homa's Former Caddie Ditches Justin Thomas' Bag for Another Major Champ
