RTE's Paul O'Flynn on life with his kids, dream holidays and his earliest memory
@Source: rsvplive.ie
What is your earliest memory? I have hazy memories of a family camping holiday in France. My older sisters told me there were sweets in the corner of the tent. It turned out to be a giant spider! I’m not sure if I actually remember it or have just been told the story so many times over the years! What is one thing you can’t live without? Sport. Participating or watching live on TV. I can’t imagine life without it. Are you scared of anything? I’m not generally anxious. But like most people I’d worry that anything bad would ever happen to my family. I wouldn’t say life changing. But I’m a huge fan of Damien Dempsey. We both grew up in Donaghmede in Dublin so his songs resonate with me. His Christmas concerts in Vicar Street are a ritual. How would someone describe you as a person? I’d say easy-going. What’s your no laughing matter moment? Sport again. I’m pretty competitive. What do you owe your parents? Everything really. My dad died when I was young, so my mam did everything for us on her own. It’s only now that I have my own children, I probably fully appreciate the sacrifices she made. What traits would you like to pass onto your kids? Kindness, I think. And work ethic. As a parent, are you good cop or bad cop? I think we’re both good cops! Who would you most like to go for a pint with? Jurgen Klopp. I’m a big Liverpool fan. It’d have to be more than one, though. Who was, or still is, your mentor? I’ve had so many great people help me throughout my career in RTÉ. I couldn’t single out one. I’ll always be grateful to Ger Gilroy for giving me my first job in Off The Ball. And Mary Butler brought me into RTÉ. Tony O’Donoghue and Declan McBennett gave me a chance in RTÉ Sport and have been good to me over the years. The late Colm Murray was a huge influence on me and I have a laugh everyday with my friend Eamon Horan. How fit are you? Reasonably. Not as much as I’d like to be. I still swim regularly and go to the gym when I can. But it can be hard to find the time between work and kids. What’s your ideal way to spend a lazy Sunday? I work a lot of weekends, so a Sunday off is a real treat. Head to the park with my children. Maybe a swim in the sea if the weather is good. And a nice lunch or dinner before a couple of pints with my friends. What’s one thing people assume about you that isn’t true? I’m not sure what people assume about me, so hard to say. What’s your dream holiday destination? I've travelled a lot for work over the years and the more of the world I see the more I appreciate home. I love travelling but if pressed I’d have to say Italy. I keep going back there. The weather, beauty, food and lifestyle are hard to beat. Do you prefer a beach holiday or a city break? Beach for sure. Can’t keep me away from the sea. What do you love most about your job? Getting a front row seat to the biggest sporting events in the world. It really is a dream job. I’ve been lucky to cover four Olympic Games for RTÉ Sport, Rugby World Cups, A women’s World Cup. I’ve followed Katie Taylor around the globe. Now I’m hosting RTÉ’s athletics coverage which is an exciting challenge. I consider myself very lucky. Paul is a sports broadcaster with RTÉ and will be presenting the World Athletics Championships from September 13 Read the full interview with Paul O'Flynn in the latest issue of RSVP Magazine, on shelves now
