Ruben Amorim can prove Ole Gunnar Solskjaer right at Manchester United

Had an ankle injury not sidelined him for the best part of three months, Amad would have had a great chance of winning the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for 2024/25. Following Ruben Amorim's appointment as Manchester United head coach at the beginning of November, the Ivorian quickly took to the Portuguese chief's coaching methods, excelling at right wing-back in his trademark 3-4-2-1 formation. Amad had struggled to nail down a regular starting berth under former United manager Erik ten Hag at the beginning of the season and Amorim's appointment offered him a new lease of life. Fortunately, for both him and United he took full advantage. Either side of his injury, he scored eight goals under Amorim to ensure he finished the campaign with a respectable tally of 11 strikes to his name. Although United have refused to rule out selling any player in this summer's transfer window , you would be hard-pressed to find anyone in favour of them cashing-in on the former Sunderland loanee. He signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract back in January to keep him at the club until June 2030. As a result, he is likely to be one of the very first names on the teamsheet next season. What his primary starting position will be, however, remains to be seen. United's ongoing pursuit of Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo means that Amad could find himself making the right wing-back spot his permanent home next season. Amad has proven he is equally comfortable playing on the right flank or as the right-sided No.10. Whatever Amorim's plan is for Amad, there is no doubt the 22-year-old has enormously benefitted from his appointment as United boss, highlighted by the fact he has already made three appearances more under him (27) than he did Ten Hag (24), who often overlooked the former Atalanta youngster. Amad joined United from the Italian side in January 2021 as a tender 18-year-old. He was a signing for the future and former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was in charge at the time, had every hope he would fulfil his potential in M16. " Manchester United has such a proud history of developing young players and everything is in place to enable Amad to reach his potential here," said Solskjaer, speaking in January 2021. "It will take time for him to adapt but his speed, vision and fantastic dribbling ability will stand him in good stead to make the transition. "He is a player with all of the raw attributes that are needed to be an important player for Manchester United in the years to come." Now Amad finds himself playing under a head coach that values him and uses him at every available opportunity, there is every chance the versatile attacker will prove Solskjaer right and become a mainstay at United for years to come. Turning 23 next month, Amad still has plenty of time on his side to build on a progressive last seven months. Amorim came along at just the right time from Amad's point of view, with Ten Hag often failing to give him the chances he deserved. "We are going to be more demanding with Amad," Amorim said in January after Amad had signed his new contract. "He knows what we want to expect from him. "Now he has a bigger responsibility because he has a long contract with a big club, so we're going to be really demanding with him." Only Bruno Fernandes emerged from the 2024/25 campaign with more credit than Amad, highlighting just how impressive the Ivorian was in what was a miserable season for the club as a collective. If Amorim continues to oversee his development in the same way as he has so far, he should not have any difficulties in ensuring Amad lives up to Solskjaer's billing.
