Saginaw-area sports highlights: Lightning postpones track regional finale at Cadillac

The athletes at the Division 2 track regional at Cadillac weren’t quite as fast as lightning. Because lightning eventually won. The 1,600 relay teams will return to Cadillac at 5 p.m. Monday to finish the track regional after lightning delays postponed the final event of the meet. After 16 events, Petoskey held a three-point lead, 78-75, over Alma for the No. 1 spot, with Swan Valley third (63.5) and Freeland seventh (37). Petoskey also led in the girls regional with 118.5 points, with Swan Valley sixth (51), Freeland seventh (48) and Alma eighth (27.5). Thomas Larson led Alma with wins in the 1,600 (4:23.25) and 3,200 (9:43.66), with the Panthers also taking first in the 3,200 relay. Boston Streng-Beougher gave Swan Valley wins in the 200 (:23.53) and 400 (:49.88). Freeland’s Zander Wheatley finished first in the 110 hurdles (:15.37) and high jump (6-2). Swan Valley’s Sydney Kuhn dominated the girls meet with victories in the 200 (:24.87), 400 (:54.03) and 300 hurdles (:45.33). Division 1 at Traverse City Central: Midland High claimed a Division 1 boys regional championship with 123 points, followed by Traverse City Central with 114 and Heritage with 79. Saginaw United was 10th with 23 points and Dow 14th with seven. Maxwell Stoecker gave Midland a pair of wins in the shot put (60-8) and discus (175-7), with LJ Gallihugh winning the 200 (:22.33), Cameron Cochran the 1,600 (4:29.67) and Matthew Berg the 110 hurdles (:15.32). Cochran ran a leg on the winning 3,200 relay. Heritage’s Nick Coleman took first in the 400 (:49.78) and ran a leg on the winning 800 relay, while Saginaw United got first places from Jamarion Goodman in the 800 (1:57.16) and Blake Jones in the high jump (6-4). Division 2 at Frankenmuth: Frankenmuth edged Flint Powers for the regional title, scoring 111.5 points with Powers scoring 105. Birch Run was 11th (17) and Bridgeport 13th (1). Brett Magnus led the Frankenmuth boys, running a personal best of 4:23.70 to win the 1,600-meter run. Niko Mamaladze added a first in the discus with a throw of 155-6. Division 3 at Vassar: Valley Lutheran claimed the regional championship with 102 points, with Caro third (75), Vassar fifth (49), Millington fifth (49), Reese eighth (38) and Carrollton ninth (35). Jack Strieter gave the Chargers a win with a personal record in the 400 (:51.21), adding legs on the Chargers’ winning 800 relay with Hayden Stout, Andrew Kunisch and Robby Samborn and the 1,600 relay with Samborn, Trent Schiavone and Wheatley Rodammer. Caro’s Luke Herron took first in the 1,600 (4:33.44) and 3,200 (9:59.83), with the Tigers also getting wins from Jacob Moore in the 800 (1:59.85) and Luke Joslyn in the discus (148-4). Millington’s Dallas Walsh took first in the 200 (:23.38), and Vassar’s Kendall Horning claimed the shot put title (47-7). Girls Track Division 1 at Traverse City Central: Traverse City West claimed the team title with 119 points, with Heritage fourth (81), Midland Dow fifth (61) and Midland High sixth (46). Jordynn Young won the 100 with a personal record time of :11.97, while Willow Mason claimed the 200 (:25.07). Young, Mason and Kaya Arnold ran legs on Heritage’s winning 800 relay and 1,600 relay. Dow’s Victoria Garces ran a personal-record time in the 800 (2:14.56), while Emilia Garces won the 3,200 (11:21.40). Gwen Thill added another first for Dow in the high jump (5-2). Sydney Roberts won the 400 for Midland High in :56.07. Division 2 at Frankenmuth: Frankenmuth ran away with the regional title, finishing with 131.6 points. Flint Powers was second (80.6), Bridgeport 11th (19) and Birch Run 12th (14). Sara Leach paced the Eagles to the girls title with a win in the long jump (16-9 ¾), and a leg on the winning 800 relay (1:49.23) with Lainey Swackhamer, Dani Titsworth and Madison Geer. Frankenmuth also won the 3,200 relay (9:50.82) behind Lucy Conzelmann, Elise Barden, Gabby Cleveland and Natalie Foltz. Division 3 at Vassar: New Lothrop edged Valley Lutheran for the team title, scoring 112 points to Valley Lutheran’s 101. Caro was fifth (56), Millington sixth (54), Vassar seventh (37) and Reese sixth (36). Mckenzie Derusha gave Valley Lutheran first places in the 100 hurdles (:16.41) and 300 hurdles (:49.37). Millington got regional titles from Chloe Basner in the 100 (:12.52) and Abigail Reis in the 3,200 (12:07.28), with Reese’s Taylor Fachting claiming the 800 (2:29.87). Caro won the 800 relay and 1,600 relay, with Na’Hayla Watkins, Jordyn Thomas and Taelor Stephens running legs in each. Boys Lacrosse Heritage 14, Lapeer 2: Elden Wideman and Colin Workman scored three goals each, leading Heritage to a win in the first round of the regional tournament. Kalen Hood-Davis led the Hawks with eight ground balls, while Josh Larsen had 14 saves in goal. Heritage advances to play Midland Dow in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Friday at Midland Community Stadium. Bullock Creek 10-10, Shepherd 9-13: Dakota Swift earned the win in Game 1, striking out two in five innings. Bryanna Herron, Charlie Bass and Delaney Violette hit doubles for the Lancers. Swift and Lillian Wassmann homered for Bullock Creek in the Game 2 loss. Hemlock 16-20, Valley Lutheran 0-1: Olivia Parker and Sarah Boyer had two hits each in the doubleheader for Valley Lutheran. Coleman 8-7, Carson City-Crystal 4-6: Isabelle Lewis and Aubrie Ellison had three hits and two RBIs each to lead Coleman to the Game 1 win, with Kendall Allen, Eliza Lewis and Klaira Sysak adding two hits each. Allen struck out 13 to earn the win. In Game 2, Coleman scored three runs in the top of the eighth and held on for the win. Isabelle Lewis led the offense with three hits, while Sydnee Bovee, Allen, Eliza Lewis, Sysak and Elley Johnson added two hits each. Michigan Lutheran Seminary 9-4, Carrollton 4-4: Will Salgat had three hits to lead MLS in the Tri-Valley Conference win in Game 1. Eli Lewis and Noah Reif added two hits and two RBIs each, with Owen Mason walking twice and driving in two runs. Caleb Martin struck out seven and allowed two hits in five innings for the Cardinals. Andrew Spiece had two hits for Carrollton. Game 2 was called after four innings tied at 4-4. Shepherd 6-14, Bullock Creek 1-3: Hunter Habitz threw 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief for the Lancers, while Emerson Johnson had a double and RBI. Matt Griese, Caden Tate and Jaxon Flowers and Mason Strayer had one hit each for Bullock Creek in Game 2. Girls Soccer Hemlock 1, Bay City John Glenn 1: Izzy Krueger scored Hemlock’s lone goal on a direct free kick, and Taryn Pratt made 19 saves for the 7-7-1 Huskies. John Glenn (16-4-2) tied the game with 1:30 remaining on a Carli Johnson goal. Millington 2, Unionville-Sebewaing 1: Millington set a team scoring record with its two goals, giving it 66 for the season and breaking the record of 65 goals set in 2017. Grace Ehrmantraut and EmmaLeigh Peters scored Millington’s goals, with Ehrmantraut and Savanna Bemiss earning assists. Kendra Peterson made 12 saves in goal for the 9-7-1 Cardinals. Bullock Creek 2, Clare 1: Clare opened the scoring, but Bullock Creek’s Claudia Moses tied it with an assist from Jillian Dast. Dast followed with her own goal to give the Lancers a 2-1 halftime lead. Audrie Stoltenberg had four saves for the Lancers, who finish the regular season at 8-3-5.
