@Source: timesofsandiego.com
It was a bad day at the office for the San Diego Wave FC, as visiting Kansas City Currentcame into Snapdragon Stadium and dominated the match to remain undefeated. The Current, one of the best teams in the National Women’s Soccer League, entered theDragon and dominated en route to improving its record to 4-0-0. The rebuilding Wave, on the other hand, now has one win, a draw and two losses. During the match, Kansas City utilized offensive aggressiveness in the first half and strongdefense in the second in order to smash the Wave. KC led 2-0 at the half as a result of a score in the 15th minute by Brazilian midfielder Debinha (who in accordance with the Brazilian custom for superstar athletes, goes by one name), and in the 24th minute by midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta. Debinha’s goal was the 50th of her NWSL regular season career, which began in 2017. Thescore came when she found the top right corner of the net off an assist from defender IzzyRodriguez. The Current’s 2-0 halftime lead also wound up being the final margin of victory. The match was a contest between the Wave’s overmatched and inexperienced youngsters –including three first-time members of the starting lineup – and the Current’s savvy,accomplished veterans. The vets taught the kids a few lessons. Due in large part to 11 Wave players having been called up to represent their respective countries on the international stage for FIFA’s April window, the team lacked some firepower, and changes to the starting lineup had to be made by head coach Jonas Eidevall. Not only did defender Trinity Armstrong, just 17, make her first career start in the NWSL, other players under age 25 in the starting lineup included forward Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, 19, midfielder Favour Emmanuel, 22, and defender Kennedy Wesley, 24. It was also the first start for both Emmanuel and Okwuchukwu, who made her NWSL debut with the Wave just two weeks ago. Despite losing the contest, the Wave won the possession game, holding the ball for 59% ofmatch time. Its possessions, however, were notable due to the lack of urgency shown, in addition to an absence of cohesion much of the time. Each team had four shots on goal. Kansas City took eight total shots, one more than theWave. The match against KC was the Wave’s second home game of the season. The team’s nexttwo contests are on the road –at Racing Louisville FC April 19 and April 26 at the ChicagoStars. The side’s next home match is set for May 4 against the San Jose-based Bay Football Club.
