Wildfire has broken out in adjacent land to Santana Golf in Mijas. Firefighters and local police received several calls warning that a large column of smoke was seen from different points of the municipality.
The smoke originates from the Arroyo Gamonal, next to the banks of the Ojén River, and in the vicinity of the Santana Golf Club. A heavyweight helicopter, a lightweight chopper, one fire engine, and 2 groups of forest firefighters are on the scene attempting to douse the flames.
It is the second time a wildfire has broken out in the same area in three years. In 2022 an investigation was launched in an attempt to discover who was to blame for a similar blaze in the same place. In that case, negligence was attributed as a major cause in that the area had been left to become overgrown and then dried out in the summer months.
While there has been no news so far as to what might have provoked the blaze, local firefighting teams and Andalusia’s INFOCA are working together to contain the spread of fire.
