School sports pitch in Bridgend to be transformed with £400,000

Funding worth over £400,000 has been secured by Bridgend Council to restore an artificial sports pitch at Bryntirion Comprehensive School that is described as being at the end of its life. Council bosses at a cabinet meeting held on July 22 heard how the authority had made a bid to the FAW’s Cymru Football Foundation and Sport Wales to turn the school's existing 2G facility into a modern 3G pitch. The project could eventually see the creation of a new full-sized 3G pitch for the area, along with with new fencing, cross-field goals, upgraded flood lights and a spectator zone with dedicated walkway. Plans say the pitch is currently used for PE sessions for students during school hours as well as by local sports groups outside of school time - though it noted that the uptake on this was currently low due to the pitch being in a poor condition. However, officers speaking at the meeting said they had seen interest in using the new site from "multiple groups" in the area if it were to be progressed. They added that the pitch would be managed by the school as part of the community asset transfer scheme with the council entering into a management agreement to enable the maintenance and upkeep of the site. The report read: "The development of the proposed pitch at Bryntirion Comprehensive School will assist with the increased demand for artificial pitches for both football and rugby across the borough, through the winter season in particular." It added: "The relationship between the school and the local community will be built upon and schemes developed wherever possible to benefit those who live in deprived areas surrounding the school and throughout the borough." Speaking at the meeting councillor Eugene Caparros of Brackla East and Coychurch Lower, said: "This investment ensures our young people have access to top class sports facilities that match their ambitions. "We're not just replacing a pitch here, we're building pride, resilience and opportunity through sport. "This project shows our commitment to health and well-being right where it matters most, in our schools." The council's leader John Spanswick said he also welcomed the news of the facility that would be well used once it was installed. The overall value of the new pitch is expected to be worth around £560,000. This would be made up of a £400,000 bid from the Cymru Football Foundation and an additional £159,768 which is currently under consideration by Sport Wales.
