Scotland's 'worst town to visit' is hidden gem that is making a comeback
@Source: dailyrecord.co.uk
Earlier this month, a Scottish Highlands town was named the country's worst place to visit by Which?. As reported by the Daily Record , Fort William was voted one of the UK's worst destinations in a report from the consumer watchdog. It ranked last on the list alongside Torquay in England with a score of just 58 per cent. Despite facing challenges including transport issues and housing shortages, Fort William is making a comeback reports The Express . According to the newspaper, the town is in the midst of a "revival". The long-awaited renovation of Belford Hospital, which has been on the cards since the '90s, has sparked local protests against perceived Government neglect. Yet, there's newfound optimism in the town—with business owners reporting a "revival" and a sense of excitement growing. As a major tourist hub, Fort William draws visitors seeking adventure in Glen Coe, Ben Nevis, Aonach Mor, and Glenfinnan. It is a favourite for hikers, climbers, mountain bikers, and those looking for a Highland getaway. In the last decade, the town has seen a surge in new independent businesses, from shops to eateries, bolstering its economy. This includes the success story of the Highland Soap Company, boasting a £6.8 million turnover and 80 staff members. Transformation is also evident in the revamped old police station. Now, it is the four-star Garrison Hotel that guests the unique experience of staying in what was once a cell. One influential figure behind the town's regeneration is Lib Dem MP for Inverness, Skye, and West Ross, Angus MacDonald. His ventures include opening the Highland Bookshop in 2017 and the Highland Cinema in 2020, the latter acclaimed as one of the UK's best independent film houses. Talking to The Scotsman , MacDonald said: "What matters most to me is the people and economy of the Highlands, and how can we make this area thrive. I read an article in Vanity Fair a few years ago, which said the best way to bring the heart back into your town is an independent cinema and an independent bookshop. "The bookshop has been a phenomenal success. And there is no doubt that the cinema will be one of the greatest things I have done in my life. "It's somewhere you can take your mother; it's somewhere you can boast to visitors about. I really wanted it to be much more than a cinema and to become the centre of the community to pull people in." Elsewhere, chairman of the West Highland Museum Ian Peter recently set up the Glen Spean Farmers Market. He said there is "definitely a new enthusiasm" about the town. Peter commented: "I think in previous years there's been more a just 'let things be' attitude. But at the moment, there's a real energy. Fort William is going through a revival." Fort William has a rich history, with links to the Jacobites through the Old Fort William and the Inverlochy Castle ruin. It also sits on the edge of the Great Glen, which can be explored by ferry, and near the head of one of Scotland's longest sea lochs, Loch Linnhe. In the nearby area are Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, the Glenfinnan Viaduct—made world-famous by Harry Potter—and Glencoe National Nature Reserve. Walking trails from the town take visitors to each of them.
