Scottie Scheffler Turns Clock Back 2,000 Days at Genesis, But Not in a Good Way
@Source: newsweek.com
Scottie Scheffler disappointed Rory McIlroy this time. Scheffler is one of the players McIlroy looks up to, often citing Scheffler's conservative targets and ability to avoid bogeys. In fact, it happened again when after the second round at the Genesis Invitational, the 27-time PGA Tour winner praised Scheffler."Scottie has proven over the past 2, 3 years that he's definitely the best at that [picking more conservative targets]," said the 2025 Pebble Beach Pro-AM winner.That came after Scheffler finished the second round at Torrey Pines with zero bogeys (67). But, it seems McIlroy might not be singing the same praises this time. The reason?Well, during the third round, the World No. 1 carded 4-over par, including three shocking bogeys. As golf statistician Justin Ray pointed out, this was the first time Scheffler had "bogeyed multiple par 5s on the same nine" in just under 2,000 days.The last time that happened was during the 2019 Sanderson Farms when he finished the tournament with nine bogeys. Scheffler has made five bogeys thus far at the Tiger Woods-hosted Genesis Invitational, which is concerning.During the 2023 PGA Tour season, Scheffler struggled mightily with the flat stick. That was the sole reason he did not dominate that year. However, he turned that around in 2024 and putted consistently well. Not great, but well enough that his historic ball-striking carried him to nine wins worldwide.Scottie Scheffler switched from his TaylorMade Qi10 Driver (8-degree loft) to a TaylorMade Qi10 with a 15-degree loft just before the $20M Torrey Pines event.
