@Source: newsweek.com
Golf fans witnessed history on Sunday as Scottie Scheffler decimated the CJ Cup Byron Nelson field. The World No. 1 went wire-to-wire for his 14th career victory on the PGA Tour, passing Jordan Spieth on the all-time list.But it was how he dominated that turned heads. Scheffler tied the 72-hole PGA Tour scoring record of 253, previously set by Justin Thomas and Ludvig Aberg.He finished the tournament at 31-under, eight shots ahead of the closest golfer, Erik van Rooyen.Scheffler's immediate reaction on the course was that of emotion. He choked back tears during an on-course interview with CBS' Amanda Balionis.After having some time to compose himself, the two-time Masters champion detailed what winning this particular tournament meant on a personal level."When I think about this tournament, I think about a lot of different stuff," Scheffler said."I grew up coming to watch it. This was my first start on the PGA Tour when I was in high school. The girl I was dating at the time is now my wife. We have one son. My sister was caddying for me at the time. She was here today. She has two kids."My family was all able to be here, and it was just really, really special memories, and I think at times it all comes crashing down to me at once."Scheffler then put things into a broader perspective on its importance."I never really got this far to be honest with you. I always just dreamed of playing golf on the PGA Tour. I would come out on the driving range and watch these guys practice, hitting their brand-new range balls."That's all I wanted to do was come out here and play a golf course that was in great shape and compete on the best golf courses in the world against the best players."Though he was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, Scheffler and his family moved to Dallas, Texas when he was six years old. He grew up there and went to Highland Park High School in Dallas.The CJ Cup Bryon Nelson (previously Byron Nelson Classic) is held annually at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. That is about 30 miles outside of Dallas.So Sunday's win was truly a homecoming for the world's best golfer.Scheffler will now take next week's Truist Championship off to prepare for the season's second major, the PGA Championship.More Golf: Shots Fired: LIV Golf Marketed Overhead at PGA Tour Byron Nelson
