@Source: newsweek.com
Mario Andretti, who is an advisor at the Cadillac Formula One team, has confirmed that Sergio Pérez is being considered as a potential driver option. Cadillac is actively evaluating options for the 2026 season when the team will make its F1 debut.Cadillac became F1's official 11th team after Formula One Management approved its bid following a first-time rejection. An increased participation by General Motors is said to have offered the much-needed push. While the American outfit gears up to develop its F1 car, its focus has now turned to the drivers.The preference was to have a young American talent alongside an experienced F1 veteran. Pérez, who has been part of F1 since 2011 and lost his Red Bull seat after the 2024 season, is on Cadillac's radar, Andretti confirmed."It's an option," he told ESPN. "It could be an option. Of course."Red Bull parted ways with Pérez after it lost the 2024 Constructors' Championship, securing the third position in the standings. The Mexican driver struggled with the RB20, allegedly riddled with balance problems. His teammate Max Verstappen managed to secure his fourth drivers' title after a significant threat from McLaren's Lando Norris, thanks to Red Bull's early season dominance.Red Bull was also assessing the performance of Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda in its junior F1 team, Racing Bulls (then VCARB), and after parting ways with Pérez, it promoted Lawson over Tsunoda. Now though, considering Lawson's performance in the first two races of the 2025 season, where he failed to score points and qualified last in China, Red Bull decided to replace him with Tsunoda from the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix. Lawson will take Tsunoda's seat at Racing Bulls.Andretti commented on the driver swap and praised Pérez. He said:"All I can say is that Liam Lawson is making Checo look very, very good."[Yuki] Tsunoda, you know, I think he probably deserved that seat more than Liam. But who am I?"In an earlier interview, Andretti revealed Cadillac's driver preferences, suggesting a strong inclination for American talent. Newsweek Sports reported:"There are more drivers available than teams at the moment. Ten teams seems a lot, but there's a lot more drivers, lot more talent out there."From our standpoint, I think the play at the beginning would be to have one experienced driver — nationality doesn't matter — and then a young American talent. These are the objectives at the moment."While Pérez is absent from the 2025 season, Andretti's statement hints at a high possibility of his F1 return next year, when the sport enters a new era of regulations.
