Shane Lowry’s ball found a divot on the eighth hole Friday at the PGA Championship — and then his emotions boiled over. He didn’t receive relief for his tee shot landing in a pre-established divot in the fairway, and he tore up the area around the gap following his next shot with his club before dropping a “f–k” in frustration and later flipping off his ball after a bogey putt. Lowry, who shot 1-over in his opening 18 holes Thursday at Quail Hollow, sat just above the projected cutline through 12 holes during his second round. His birdie on the eighth hole marked his second of the round, but he recovered to par the next three holes and collect a birdie on No. 12, though. The divot, though, caused Lowry to lose his temper for at least one hole. When his first shot landed, Lowry spoke with a rules official on the course, but during an event where mud balls have also become a popular topic of conversation due to heavy rain earlier in the week, he wasn’t able to change anything before continuing. He slammed the ground with his club following the second shot before the camera panned to the direction of his ball, and the broadcast later captured Lowry flashing his middle finger when he finished the hole with the putt. Lowry, the No. 10 ranked golfer, sat eight shots behind leader Jhonattan Vegas, who shot a 1-under in the second round to take a lead into the weekend in search of his first major. “This is kind of what we put all those hours for,” Vegas told reporters after the round. “You put all those hours to give yourself chances like this. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to do it throughout my career, but you never know. “You’ve got to keep the pedal down, keep your head down, and keep working hard. You never know when things are going to turn your way. I know I have the game to compete in these big events. I’ve just got to do what I do, and good things could happen.’’
