Shane Lowry Matches Tiger Woods Feat 22 Years Ago at Arnold Palmer Invitational
@Source: newsweek.com
Shane Lowry shot a 5-under 67 Friday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational to take a two-shot lead over the field. In doing so, he joined Tiger Woods in the record books.The last person to lead after 36 holes in consecutive years at Bay Hill was Woods in 2002 and 2003, per golf stats guru Justin Ray.Now Lowry can say he did the same thing.Woods won four straight at Bay Hill from 2000 to 2003, so it is not quite the same, but nonetheless, it is an achievement. When Tiger accomplished that feat, he made history himself becoming the first player since Gene Sarazen in 1930 to win four straight years at the same event.Lowry led last year after 36 holes, but a third round 80 derailed his chances.Hopefully, that will not creep into his mind and affect his play heading into the weekend.The Irishman was among four players who trailed Wyndham Clark on Thursday, and stayed steady throughout Friday's round.Lowry began his day with back-to-back birdies at the 2nd and 3rd holes. He added another at the par-3 7th to turn in 33 strokes.The 2019 Open Championship winner picked up two more birdies on 10 and 13. He was 5-under through 15 holes and then had his one hiccup of the round.Lowry made a bogey after a tough tee shot off the 16th and proceeded to two-putt from four feet. However, he did not let that bother him as he picked up his sixth birdie of the day on 18 to close with some momentum. His flat stick was on fire, as he made 112 feet of putts.Through two rounds he leads the field in strokes gained approach to the green where Lowry is picking up an impressive 5.232 strokes. Overall, Lowry is picking up 10.629 shots on the field in strokes gained total.His game is in good shape, and it has shown this season. Lowry has had a decent start to the year. He finished second to Rory McIlroy at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, was T39 at the Genesis Invitational, and was T11 last week at the Cognizant Classic.Lowry has some work to do to match what the Big Cat did in 2003 when he won by 11 shots, but to do anything that Tiger did is something of note.More Golf: Shane Lowry's 6-Word Blunt Reaction to Keegan Bradley's 'F***ing' Ryder Cup Rant
