(Photo by Ryan Pierse/Getty Images) Getty Images For much of this season, Chelsea was heading in the right direction under Enzo Maresca. The Blues were firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification. In fact, there was even a discussion towards the end of 2024 over Chelsea’s chances of challenging for the Premier League title. A lot has changed since then. While Chelsea has won its last two league games, there has been a significant drop off. Now, the Stamford Bridge side will do well to finish in the top five. It seems more likely that Chelsea will be in the Europa League next season rather than back in the Champions League. The Italian coach has been blamed for the Blues becoming predictable in the attacking third. His favoured style of soccer is seen by many as the reason for Chelsea’s inability to main the pace it set for itself in the first half of the 2024/25 campaign. Chelsea therefore faces another managerial decision. Last summer, the club parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino despite a late rally to ultimately finish sixth in the Premier League table. This wasn’t enough for Chelsea to keep the former Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur boss. He quickly departed. Chelsea has spent close to $1 billion on new players over the last three years with Maresca’s squad one of the most accomplished in the Premier League. However, some look at a collection of players being under-utilised by Pep Guardiola’s former assistant. (Photo by Darren Walsh/Chelsea FC via Getty Images) Chelsea FC via Getty Images Nothing has been reported to suggest Maresca’s position at Stamford Bridge is at risk. Chelsea is still chasing Champions League qualification and so no decision will be take before the end of the season. However, with a tricky run-in of fixtures on the horizon, Chelsea might have no choice but to consider the future beyond the summer. Stamford Bridge has been a chaotic place ever since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital arrived as Chelsea’s new owners following the end of the Roman Abramovich era. The Blues have been through four different managers and so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that they could consider a fifth. The final four games of the season could still see Chelsea consolidate the progress it has made under Maresca, but it could equally highlight some of the fundamental issues that remain. Those are problems that another manager might have a better chance of addressing heading into next season. Editorial StandardsForbes Accolades
