@Source: mlive.com
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - From future Division-I college athletes to state champions, the Grand Rapids area is loaded with prep standouts during this spring high school sports season.
With that in mind, we’re highlighting some that have elevated their game to elite status as part of a multi-week project recognizing the area’s best athletes by graduating class, then giving readers a chance to vote on the one they think stands out above the rest.
First up are the seniors, whose seasons are taking on a bit more urgency with the realization that their time wearing their school colors is dwindling.
Follow along as we look at 36 of the Grand Rapids area’s best spring sports athletes from the class of 2025, then place your vote at the end.
Readers have unlimited voting until 9 a.m. Monday, April 28, and we’ll publish the winner later that week. Voting has no bearing on postseason honors, such as the all-conference or all-state teams.
The series will continue Monday, April 28 with the area’s top junior spring sports athletes, followed by underclassmen on May 5.
To nominate a standout spring sports athlete from the junior, sophomore or freshman classes, you can email Patrick Nothaft at pnothaft@mlive.com with that athlete’s stats and accomplishments.

Case Bosch, Jenison baseball
The 6-foot-5 senior lefty and Coastal Carolina commit entered the season as one of the state’s top pitchers, and he has looked the part so far. After three starts, Bosch is 2-0 and has yet to allow a run, while is 0.667 WHIP is also impressive. He has fanned 22 batters in nine innings, while allowing five hits and one walk. Offensively, he’s batting .250 with four RBIs, six runs scored and three walks against zero strikeouts. In Saturday’s 6-5 win over Hudsonville, he led off the seventh inning with a walk, then came around to score the game-winning run.
Makenzie Cammenga, Unity Christian softball
The senior pitcher is coming off a junior season that saw her set a school record for wins in a season (31), and she’s off to another strong start this year. In six appearances, Cammenga is 5-0 with a 0.56 ERA, 1.120 WHIP and 37 strikeouts in 25 innings. She opened the season with a 13-strikeout shutout of a talented Calvin Christian team, and she has also helped her cause at the plate, boasting a .353 average with one double, seven RBIs and two runs scored for the 6-0 Crusaders.
John Cassiday, GR Christian boys golf
After placing sixth on Christian’s state champion team at the 2023 Division 2 finals, Cassiday sunk back to 22nd last season at the state finals, but it looks like he’s on track for another all-state caliber campaign. Through six nine-hole rounds, Cassiday boasts a scoring average of 37.0 strokes, and he’s at 75.0 for his two 18-hole rounds.
Seth Conner, Jenison boys track
The future Grand Valley State runner is coming off a Division 1 cross country state title and has carried over that success into the spring by placing first in 10 of his 11 races this year, including season-best times of 9:41.50 in the 3,200 run and 4:27.74 in the 1,600.
Drew Duthler, Coopersville baseball
The utility player and Davenport University commit has made a big impact for the 6-0-1 Broncos this year, boasting a 2-0 record on the mound with a 1.50 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 14 innings. At the plate, Duthler is batting .409 with three doubles, five RBIs and five runs scored.
Max Ferrick, Forest Hills Eastern baseball
The Davenport University signee and two-time all-stater is off to another solid start, boasting a .286 batting average with three doubles, a triple and two home runs, while driving in 13 runs and scoring 16 more. On the mound, he has struck out 14 batters, while allowing just three earned runs on seven hits and eight walks in 11 innings for the 10-1 Hawks, who are ranked No. 2 in Division 2.
Lila Fus, Forest Hills Northern/Eastern girls lacrosse
The core of the Bird Dogs’ defense for the past two seasons, Fus earned first team all-state honors as a sophomore for the state runners up, then garnered second team recognition last year as part of FHNE’s regional finalist campaign. This season, she leads the Bird Dogs with 25 caused turnovers and 19 ground balls, to go along with one goal, two assists and seven draw controls.
Ava Gardner, Hudsonville softball
The Purdue Fort Wayne signee played a big role in Hudsonville’s undefeated state championship campaign last year, finishing the season batting .456 from the clean-up spot. She figures to play an even bigger role this season after moving to center field, and while her hitting numbers (.375 average, one double, two triples) are a little down from last year, the Eagles have extended their winning streak to 46 games, and Gardner’s play is a big reason that undefeated run exists.
Sohanny Gonzalez-Castillo, Wyoming Potter’s House girls track
A two-time defending state champ in the long jump, Gonzalez-Castillo set her personal best of 17 feet, 4 inches in the event at the 2023 Division 3 finals, then jumped 16 feet, 8.25 inches to reach the top of the podium in Division 3 last year. This year, she matched her career best of 17 feet, 4 inches in the season-opening meet, and that mark ranks eighth in the state across all divisions.
Logan Green, Rockford boys lacrosse
A four-year starter for the Rams, Green is a two-time all-state long stick midfielder that earned first team honors as a sophomore and third team honors as a junior. This year, the Lewis University commit is off to another strong start, collecting 34 ground balls, causing 12 turnovers, tallying one assist and winning 50 percent of his draws for the 7-1 Rams.
Naomi Green, Rockford girls lacrosse
The Howard University commit is coming off a first team all-state junior season that saw her lead Rockford to the Division 1 state finals, where the runner-up Rams held Brighton to seven goals in the lowest scoring girls lacrosse championship game in MHSAA history. As a defender, Green played a big role in that, and while she might not get the eye-popping stats of her teammates, she has Rockford off to a 5-2 start this season, with the Rams allowing just seven goals per game.
Tessa Grooters, Forest Hills Central girls soccer
The Ferris State signee has been a key part of Central’s defense since her sophomore year and really took a leap last season, when she contributed to 13 shutouts and added 13 assists for the Rangers, whose season ended with a regional semifinal shootout loss to eventual state champ Spring Lake. This year, the 6-0-1 Rangers have allowed just two goals in seven games, including a clean sheet against top-ranked Unity Christian last week.
Kylee Hoebeke, Thornapple Kellogg softball
After batting .621 last year, Hoebeke is off to another stellar start, with the shortstop and GVSU commit batting .524 with four doubles, two triples and a home run through six games. She has driven in nine runs and has scored nine more, and she has yet to strike out in 25 plate appearances. Hoebeke’s biggest hit of the early season was a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning that gave Thornapple Kellogg a 5-3 win over Lake Odessa Lakewood.
Kellan Hudson, East Grand Rapids girls lacrosse
A future Division-I lacrosse player at Winthrop University, Hudson has been a key player in EGR’s program for the last three years, helping the Pioneers reach the Division 2 state finals in 2023 and earning second team all-state honors as a defender last season. This year, she has nine ground balls and 13 caused turnovers for a 5-0 EGR squad that has allowed just 20 goals all season.
Adam Huff, Wayland boys track
The defending Division 2 state champ in the discus, Huff is the favorite to repeat this year, though it might take him some time to find a rhythm, as the senior athlete works on his family’s farm in the offseason, rather than participate in indoor track.
Reed Kartes, Byron Center boys lacrosse
The Maryville University commit earned first team all-state honors as an attacker during Byron Center’s run to its first regional title in 2024. This year, Kartes has 28 goals and 15 assists though eight games for the 4-4 Bulldogs.
Davis Kemper, South Christian baseball
The 6-foot-7 lefty hasn’t pitched a ton this year, logging just 3 2/3 innings and striking out seven while allowing one earned run during that span, but he has been red-hot at the plate, boasting a .500 batting average with five doubles, a home run, 11 RBIs and nine runs scored. Kemper has also drawn five walks against just two strikeouts for the 5-5 Sailors.
Jordyn Klaasen, Zeeland West girls soccer
The defensive center midfielder and Ball State signee is a two-time all-state selection that received a second team nod last season after notching nine goals and six assists for the 8-7-1 Dux. This year, Klaasen has Zeeland West off to a 2-1-1 start, including a 2-1 win over defending Division 2 state champ Spring Lake.
Ava Lutke, Unity Christian girls soccer
The Michigan State commit is a favorite to win the state’s 2025 Miss Soccer award to cap a stellar four-year career that has seen her reach the state finals every season and collected 76 goals and 52 assists during her first three campaigns. This year, Lutke has 8-0-1 Unity Christian ranked No. 1 in Division 2, where the Crusaders will try to win a state title for the first time, after claiming 12 in Division 3 since 2005.
Cate Marshall, GR Catholic Central girls lacrosse
The midfielder and University of Massachusetts commit is coming off a second team all-state season that saw her collect 69 goals and 37 assists during Catholic Central’s undefeated run to the Division 2 state championship, including a hat trick in the Cougars’ 10-9 state finals win over Detroit Country Day. Through Catholic Central’s first five games this season, Marshall has 29 goals, 12 assists, 57 draw controls, 15 caused turnovers and 25 ground balls.
Hezekiah Nobel, Tri-unity Christian boys golf
Nobel placed 22nd individually with rounds of 85 and 83 at last year’s Division 4 state finals, but he’s among the best in D4 this year, with an 18-hole scoring average of 78.0, which ranks ninth within the division, and a nine-hole average of 36.8, which is good for fifth.
Grant Ofield, Forest Hills Northern boys golf
A first team all-state pick in Division 1 last year, Ofield is coming off a junior campaign that saw him place 13th at the state finals with rounds of 74 and 78. He hasn’t carded too many rounds this season and is averaging 39.6 rounds per nine holes and 80 per 18, but once the weather starts to warm up, expect his scores to start falling.
Kellen Payne, Byron Center baseball
Through six games, the senior pitcher and University of Nevada commit is batting .389 with a double and a home run, while driving in six runs and scoring four more for the 5-1 Bulldogs. Payne has also displayed his stuff on the mound, posting a 3-0 record and 0.58 ERA with 22 strikeouts and just three hits allowed in 12 innings.
Will Pollack, Forest Hills Northern boys golf
A three-time all-state selection, Pollack has earned first team honors the past two years and is coming off a junior season that saw him place eighth at the Division 1 state finals with rounds of 75 and 74. So far this season, the Wayne State signee is averaging 37.2 strokes per nine-hole round and 72.5 per 18, which is currently 11th in the state.
Lyla Reynolds, Hopkins softball
The star catcher and Davenport University commit has been a little bit behind her junior year batting average of .626, but she has still shown a lot of power with five doubles and three home runs to go along with a respectable .379 average. She has driven in 13 runs and scored 14 more through 10 games for the 4-6 Vikings. Defensively, Reynolds had thrown out one of eight base runners and picked off two more.
Jurnee Ross, Sparta softball
The senior second baseman is coming off an all-state season that saw her bat .492 with seven doubles, seven triples and three home runs, and she’s off to a solid start again this spring, batting .500 with four RBIs and five runs scored for the 2-4 Spartans.
Helen Sachs, West Ottawa girls track
One of West Michigan’s best distance runners in recent memory, Sachs earned her third cross country all-state medal with a runner-up finish at the Division 1 finals in the fall, and she’s looking to close out her career with some more hardware on the track this spring. The Notre Dame commit has medaled in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs at every state meet she has competed in, and while she has yet to win a state championship in those events, her 3,200 indoor time of 10:07.63 earned her a state title last month and would have set the MHSAA outdoor state finals record.
Kierea Smits, Holland Christian softball
The future Division-II college softball player at Palm Beach Atlantic is off to a strong start this year, batting .679 with seven doubles, a triple, 18 RBIs and 12 runs scored, while drawing two walks without striking out. As a pitcher, Smits has a 2-2 record, 4.09 ERA and 1.675 WHIP with 41 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings.
Spencer Strelecki, Jenison boys lacrosse
A future teammate of Byron Center’s Reed Kartes at Maryville University, Strelecki is coming off a second team all-state season as a goalie after leading Jenison to an 11-8 season, which marked its highest win total since 2021. This year, Jenison is sitting at 5-3 after eight games, with Strelecki accounting for 87 saves with a save percentage of 68, 23 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and two goals.
Brendan Thompson, Forest Hills Eastern baseball
The Cal State Bakersfield commit is off to a fast start for a 10-1 Eastern squad that is ranked No. 2 in Division 2. In six games, Thompson is batting .529 with four doubles, eight runs scored and seven RBIs, while drawing three walks and striking out just once. He has also stolen three bases without getting caught boasts a solid fielding percentage of .905.
Kianna Vork, Hamilton softball
Vork set Hamilton’s career home run record with her 24th dinger last season and finished her junior campaign with a .540 batting average and 17 doubles. She has yet to clear the fences this season but is still batting an impressive .500 with four doubles, seven RBIs and four runs scored for the 2-2 Hawkeyes. From the circle, she’s 1-2 with a 3.10 ERA, a 2.016 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings.
RJ Wagamon, Lowell girls soccer
The Western Michigan signee opted to play club soccer last spring, but previously put together an impressive sophomore campaign on the high school circuit that included 18 goals and 13 assists. The Red Arrows struggled to a 6-9-3 finish in her absence, but they’re 5-1-1 this year, with Wagamon accounting for 12 goals in six games, including a single-game school-record six goals against Coopersville.
Andrea Wang, Forest Hills Northern girls tennis
Wang went 27-0 and won a No. 2 singles state title last season as part of Northern’s run to a Division 2 team title, and is now playing at No. 1, where she is 5-1 on the year, including wins over Devin Rusk, of No. 3 Birmingham Seaholm, and Lilah Zaskowski, of Forest Hills Eastern. Her lone loss is to Detroit Country Day defending No. 1 singles state champ Sophia Grzesiak.
Alli Wright, Jenison softball
The Grand Valley State commit is in her fourth year as Jenison’s ace and is off to another solid start, despite facing some of the area’s toughest competition. In five appearances, Wright has a 2-3 record, 2.76 ERA and 1.333 WHIP with 47 strikeouts in 33 innings. Offensively, she’s batting .214 with two doubles and an RBI for the 4-4 Wildcats.
Ella Zoerhoff, East Kentwood girls soccer
The University of Toledo signee has earned all-state honors the past two seasons, including after a junior campaign that saw her tally 24 goals and four assists in her first 15 games for a Falcon squad that went 3-9-6. This year, East Kentwood has already matched that win total with a 3-1-2 mark.
Anna Zoet, Calvin Christian softball
The hard-hitting third baseman is batting a mind-boggling .789 through 11 games for the 7-4 Squires with nine doubles, two triples and five home runs, while scoring 27 runs and driving in 20 more. She has also walked twice and struck out just once, and Zoet has used her speed to steal 11 bases in 13 attempts.
