NEW DELHI -- U.S. President Donald Trump's move to impose tariffs on foreign movies has piled pressure on an Indian film industry that is struggling for hits domestically and is increasingly eyeing opportunities abroad.
Indian movies have enjoyed great success in the U.S. of late, with "Kalki 2898 AD" grossing $18.3 million and "Jawan" raking in $15.2 million in North America. This international presence has also been bolstered by major award wins, with Oscars, Emmys and a Cannes Grand Prix going to Indian films in recent years. The overseas box office is expected to have been worth 21 billion rupees ($245.8 million) in the fiscal year that ended March 31, according to a recent Motion Picture Association (MPA) and Deloitte report, with this projected to rise to 27 billion rupees in the 2028-2029 fiscal year.
