Stubb meets with "Coalition of the Willing" ahead of US visit with Zelensky on Monday

Finnish President Alexander Stubb's office has confirmed that he will accompany Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky when he holds talks with their US counterpart, Donald Trump, in Washington on Monday. "In addition to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and President Stubb, other European leaders will also attend the meeting," according to a statement issued on Sunday afternoon. At least European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are to attend as well. The American news site Politico reported late Saturday that European leaders had asked Stubb to do so, attributing the information or "two European diplomats and a person familiar with the matter". Meanwhile the New York Times reported that unnamed European leaders had been invited to join the meeting between Trump and Zelensky. According to Politico, the idea is that Stubb's presence at the talks could help prevent potential clashes between Trump and Zelensky such as those that occurred during the Ukrainian leader’s disastrous visit to the White House in February. The aim would also be to reassure the US president that European leaders would be included in any potential follow-up discussions, it said. Politico referred to Stubb as "one of Trump’s favorite interlocutors". Despite policy differences regarding the Ukraine war, for instance, the two presidents apparently bonded during Stubb’s extended golfing visit to Trump’s Florida resort in March, with the US leader gifting Stubb a golf set. On Sunday afternoon, Stubb takes part in a video conference with other leaders of the so-called “Coalition of the Willing,” hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, just ahead of Zelensky's visit to Washington. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will co-preside at the meeting, Macron’s office said. The coalition is a loose grouping of more than 20 mostly European countries that have indicated willingness to help enforce Ukrainian security in case of an eventual ceasefire agreement. 1.47pm: Updated with confirmation of visit. 1.58: Updated with more attendees.
