The scary numbers behind PSG's preparations for Liverpool Champions League clash
@Source: mirror.co.uk
So much for the seeding. Liverpool’s European endeavours have not earned just rewards as Arne Slot and friends head to Paris on Wednesday to face a team that has been on a rampage. Runaway leaders in Ligue 1, PSG host Lille tonight after a remarkable February in which they scored 32 goals in eight games. The opposition may have been of a far lower standard than Liverpool but fresh from knocking seven without reply past Stade Briochin in the last eight of the French Cup on Wednesday night, striker Goncalo Ramos has warned: "Every competition is an objective for us." Ten days ago they scored another seven against Brest in the Champions League to complete a 10-0 aggregate victory, having also struck five against the same opponents in the league. And while the pursuit of a maiden Champions League remains a difficult one for the Qatar-owned club, head coach Luis Enrique is putting together a team rather than a group of individuals in the post Kylian Mbappe era. The numbers speak volumes. In 38 matches across four competitions they have racked up 101 goals and they are on a 21 game unbeaten run, winning 18 of those, and their only defeats so far this season have come in the Champions League initial phase. And those came against Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich - sides who will have been expecting to challenge at the business end from the outset. Ousmane Dembele, who had previously fallen out with the club's hierarchy, has 25 goals and five assists in all competitions. But the big change from previous seasons is how the load is being shared around. Bradley Barcola has 16 goals on top of nine assists, Lee Kang-In has six and four, Achraf Hakimi five and 10, Ramos has a dozen goals to his name despite missing the early months of the season due to an ankle injury that required surgery. "Three goals and an assist are fantastic for me,” he said after a leading role in the midweek Cup win. “Some players are coming back from injuries and no one got injured which is good for us.” Then there is the wildcard addition of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who arrived from Napoli last month and is still adapting to his new surroundings. Winning Ligue 1 looks an even surer thing than Liverpool’s grip on the Premier League table with a 13 point lead and an invincible campaign on the cards. But Enrique will not allow them to get carried away ahead of their biggest test of the season. "You have to be ready and clinical,” he said this week. A statement that could easily be echoed by Slot.
