Hyderabad: Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Hyderabad presented its innovative work on atomic magnetometers during the Scientific and Technological Advancements symposium held here on Friday. G. Rajalakshmi, a scientist at TIFR Hyderabad, shared her team's progress on developing the atomic magnetometer. This device can be potentially used in the health sector, such as imaging brain waves and detecting fetal heartbeats.Explaining the principle behind the magnetometer, Rajalakshmi said, "Atoms have electrons that possess a spin. This spin generates an electromagnetic field, similar to a magnetic compass. We use a light beam to measure the strength of this magnetic field. I am developing small quantum sensors using this principle that will have potential applications in healthcare and other fields."The event brought together scientific and technical teams from TIFR centres, fostering discussions on research and exploring opportunities for collaboration across disciplines. The event began with a plenary lecture by Jayaram Chengalur, TIFR Director, who presented on the advancements in time-domain astronomy with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), underscoring the telescope's continuous upgrades.Other key presentations included Awadhesh Pandit on the the contributions of the Next Generation Genomics Facility in Bengaluru, which focuses on developing cost-effective sequencing methods. Santosh Koli from TIFR Balloon Facility discussed the air safety subsystems used for high-altitude balloon experiments. Milind Naik, Pankaj Madhwani, and Bharat Bhushan Singh introduced TIFR's advanced research infrastructure for astronomy and space sciences. The symposium also held poster sessions allowing students and early researchers to present their ideas.
