Gatland linked to French club
Former Wales head coach Warren Gatland has been linked with Top 14 outfit Stade Francais, according to reports in France.
Stade are 11th in the table, just four points ahead of Vannes, who are the bottom-placed team in France's premier division. It's a big fall from grace for the Parisian club, who finished in second place behind Toulouse last season.
New Zealander Gatland had a dismal second spell with Wales, losing 14 international matches in a row, and subsequently left his post in the middle of the Six Nations. However, he has great experience coaching at both club and international level and a track record of winning silverware, so his services are no doubt still in high demand.
As well as potentially getting back into coaching, Gatland has a new job lined up already. In a live Q&A with The Telegraph, Gatland revealed that he will be covering the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia for Sky Sports this summer.
"I am not done with coaching and not sure what my next step will be," he said when quizzed on his future. "I am going to have a break and have just been enjoying watching the rugby, and looking forward to the Lions series and doing some work with Sky Sports.
"I don’t know what will be next but I have never had a plan in looking too far forward. What will be will be and something will come along. I have already been contacted by a number of people about possible options so I will maybe look at something after the summer.
"One thing that would potentially interest me is working with a team going into the next World Cup," Gatland added. "I have been proud of what we have done in Wales and I think the experience I have had could be valuable to a team even if in a consultancy role."
Michael Cheika speaks out on future
Leicester Tigers head coach Michael Cheika has spoken out on his future.
The former Wallabies boss has been regularly linked with the vacant Wales head coach role, along with the likes of Ireland coach Simon Easterby and Glasgow Warriors' Franco Smith.
He decided in January that he would not extend his contract at Welford Road beyond the one year he originally agreed. He recently spoke with BBC Radio Leicester about his plans in the coming months.
"I've not got anything sorted," said Cheika. "I'm trying to not think about that to be honest, I just want to do my best here and see what happens."
He also explained that he doesn't think his impending departure will lead to the players wanting to give him a good send-off with trophies and success.
"It's nothing to do with me," Cheika said. "That would be a very vain approach to think they will be doing it for me. I'm here in the leadership position and that position is to serve; you have to serve the people, serve my players, the club and do the absolute best I can. If anything it's on me to do more than I could ever do to make sure that is concretized.
"The fact that I would not be here next year would have no bearing on my desire to win. That burns pretty bright regardless."
Cardiff youngster signs new deal
Eighteen-year-old winger Joseff Jones has signed a senior academy deal with Cardiff Rugby.
Jones is a Wales under-18s international and is currently finishing his A-Levels at Ysgol Glantaf in the Llandaff North district of Cardiff. The winger's head of rugby at the school was full of praise for his student.
“Joseff’s journey is a testament to the strong partnership between Ysgol Glantaf and Cardiff Rugby," he explained.
“Over the past two years, he has flourished, showing significant growth both on the rugby field and in his academic studies. He recognised the areas he needed to develop and worked tirelessly to improve his game and has enjoyed two outstanding seasons in the Schools and Colleges League.
“As a school, we are immensely proud of Joseff, who has been part of a strong contingent of Ysgol Glantaf pupils excelling within the Cardiff Rugby pathway. His development is a testament not only to his own dedication but also to the close and highly effective partnership between Ysgol Glantaf and Cardiff Rugby.”
Academy manager Gruff Rees echoed those sentiments: “We have known and worked with Joseff for quite a while and his finishing is excellent whilst he is incredibly coachable and will develop considerably in our environment full time and playing at SRC level.
“We are really developing depth across positions in our pathway as we prepare for the next few years and Joseff’s ability and character will add to that in abundance.”
Dragons nail down star
Dragons RFC full-back Huw Anderson has agreed a new long-term deal with the Newport-based region.
The rising star has put in a number of impressive performances for Pontypool in Super Rygbi Cymru, which earned him a start against Newcastle Falcons in the Champions Cup last November. That performance saw him earn the player of the match award after scoring a stunning long-range try.
Dragons boss Filo Tiatia has branded the 20-year-old as "deceptively powerful".
“Huw has been outstanding. He’s a senior academy player who has taken his opportunity and been awesome to work with," explained Tiatia.
“He’s accelerated his learning, worked really hard on his communications at 15, and he can also play very well on the wing. Huw is deceptively powerful, can shrug off opposition players, and we are proud of his efforts and how he continuously pushed himself. He is one of a number of talented homegrown players we have here who can play a big role in our future and so we are pleased he has re-signed with us.”
No promotion/relegation in Premiership
There will be no promotion or relegation in the English Premiership this season.
Championship side Ealing Trailfinders have failed to meet the minimum standard criteria for a Premiership team and will subsequently be denied promotion. The club applied for promotion and had the chance for a play-off match against the bottom-placed Premiership side, but the RFU have revealed that the club have not met the requirements for ground capacity and safety compliance.
Coventry, who are in third place, also failed the minimum standards. Doncaster Knight did pass, but are 29 points behind Trailfinders in eighth place.
"We know how hard those clubs with aspirations to join the Premiership are working both to generate the required investment to be sustainable within that league and to ensure they have the required infrastructure to support themselves," explained Mike McTighe, Men's Professional Rugby Board Chair.
