These are your evening rugby headlines on Monday, May 26. England legend Brian Moore has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Henry Pollock and warned the Northampton Saints star to "let his rugby do the talking". Pollock was involved in a post-match scuffle with Bordeaux players after Northampton lost out to the French side in the Champions Cup final in Cardiff on Saturday and was accused of lacking respect by opposition fly-half Mathieu Jalibert, while he has since been mocked by the Bordeaux team, who shared photos of themselves mocking his signature 'pulse check' celebration following the game. The 20-year-old, who was named in Andy Farrell's British & Irish Lions squad earlier this month, has quickly gained a reputation as a big character whose confidence borders on arrogance, with England and Northampton legend Courtney Lawes describing him as a "cocky little b*******"". But while he has proven that he can get under his opponents' skin, Pollock has been warned by Moore that his actions may make life harder for him further down the line, with Saturday's defeat to Bordeaux an example of how things might unfold. While he praised the back rower as a "potentially generational talent", the former Lions hooker said that while Pollock "has the freedom to act as he chooses, so have his rivals" and warned him to expect a big reaction from his opponents going forward. Writing in his column for The Telegraph , Moore said: "His talent and his potential to affect a match makes him a factor for which every opponent will plan. However, look more closely at the coverage of Pollock’s battles against his last two opponents and note the phrasing used. "Both weeks it was of Pollock being 'targeted'. Such phrasing implies less-innocent motives than simple planning and the regrettable fracas after the final whistle of the Champions Cup final lends credence to theories that Pollock was unfairly targeted." On the 'pulse check' celebration and subsequent mocking, the 63-year-old added: "I doubt that Pollock had an ulterior motive when celebrating in this manner, but did he also consider what reaction and motivation this might provoke in future opponents? "Pollock, and every young player today, is encouraged to display overt individuality for the good of the sport, but they are left alone to deal with any negative consequences. The conundrum for him is how to walk the tall-poppy-syndrome tightrope." Ireland stars Tadhg Furlong and Robbie Henshaw have been ruled out of Leinster's URC quarter-final clash with the Scarlets this weekend. Furlong, who has 79 caps for Ireland, has picked up a minor calf injury after a campaign ravaged by setbacks, which have seen him manage only eight games for Leinster. Meanwhile, Henshaw will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury set to keep him sidelined for three to four weeks. The Irish province are already missing talismanic back row Caelan Doris, who was ruled out of this summer's British & Irish Lions tour with a shoulder injury that could keep him out of action until November. However, Leinster could welcome back Ireland wing Jordan Lamour for the all-important clash at the Aviva Stadium, with the 27-year-old returning to fitness having been sidelined for five months with a hamstring injury. The Scarlets set up Saturday's quarter-final clash by claiming the last play-off spot ahead of rivals Cardiff. However, they face a sizeable task in conquering Leinster, who finished eight points clear of the chasing pack at the top of the table having only lost twice in the league during the regular season. By Anthony Brown, PA Pete Murchie is unfazed by Glasgow’s sketchy form heading into the United Rugby Championship play-offs because he recalls that they were not firing on all cylinders before winning the title last year. The defending champions host Stormers in the quarter-final on Friday after losing four of their last five matches, and each of their last three. However, Warriors defence coach Murchie is mindful of the fact they lost two of their last three games of the regulation season a year ago before pulling it all together when it mattered most to defeat Stormers, Munster and Bulls and claim the championship. “We’re not in the business of losing games and being happy about it,” he said. “But in the last game against Leinster (a 17-5 defeat) we looked a lot more like ourselves, based on the amount of young players we had playing and how we fronted up. “It was definitely a step forward in terms of performance. Last year, I wouldn’t say we were exactly humming in the three or four games before this period, so it is about putting our best quality performance out this weekend.” Glasgow’s bid to make an impact in the play-offs has been aided by the fact Scott Cummings, Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulotu – all of whom were called up by the British and Irish Lions earlier this month – have returned in recent weeks following lengthy injury lay-offs. Murchie said it was a notable boost to be able to call on players of the calibre of Scotland captain Tuipulotu – who played the first half against Ulster – at such a crucial phase of the season. “Obviously players who have got experience of having done it before, international players who have played on the bigger stage, he’s obviously got massive leadership qualities for us,” Murchie said. “He did pretty well in his 40 minutes against a tough opposition. He didn’t look rusty at all, so it’s big to have someone of his quality back available for these games.” The other member of Glasgow’s Lions quartet, Zander Fagerson, is still recovering from a calf injury and it is still unclear whether he will be able to play again for his club this term, but Murchie reported that the Scotland tighthead is “progressing well”. “He’s doing bits and pieces out there today,” Murchie said. “What that looks like for Glasgow still remains to be seen, but there’s definitely no concerns when it comes to the Lions. “He’s coming along well, but obviously the further we go in the competition, the better the chance it gives you in terms of Glasgow, but he’s obviously not ready for this weekend.”
