TSA Says Waffle House IDs ‘Will Not Suffice’ as REAL IDs: ‘Sorry’
@Source: people.com
It’s official: Waffle House IDs are not considered valid identification to fly according to the Transportation Security Administration. Earlier this week, X user Matthew Cappucci posted a photo of his yellow laminated Waffle House ID and wrote, “TSA might want RealID, but I have the realest ID.” The viral post garnered the attention of 2.2 million users who viewed the humorous picture. Commenters wrote about their jealousy of the poster’s coveted card and many asked how someone acquires an ID from the Southern fast food chain. PEOPLE reached out to Waffle House for details but did not immediately hear back. The TSA’s official X account replied to the post two days later, writing, “Respectfully, no… Waffle House IDs will not suffice as a Real ID alternative (sorry).” Users kept the joke going in the comments of TSA’s repost and asked if Blockbuster or Top Golf ID cards would suffice. The jokey exchange comes weeks after the TSA shared a message on Facebook on Wednesday, June 4, to dispel rumors that travelers can use their Costco cards at airports. “We love hotdogs and rotisserie chickens as much as the next person but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not,” the government agency wrote. The REAL ID is a form of identification that meets higher security standards set by the federal government. Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but it took 20 years for it to go into effect. A REAL ID looks similar to a regular driver’s license. However, a major difference will be the star that appears on the upper right corner. That star symbolizes the identification card is REAL ID-compliant. The need for REAL IDs rolled out nationwide on May 7, and the majority of states now require them for domestic airline travel and access to federal buildings.
