(SportsMax) Turkey may not be done trying to entice Jamaican athletes to switch their allegiance to the European country to be able to represent them at the 2028 LA Olympics.
According to Turkish sports journalist Sevket Furkan Erbay, the country is very passionate about the 4x100m and could turn their attention to recruiting some of Jamaica’s promising young sprinters.
“They will ask for sprinters because Turkish authorities are really keen on the relay teams. Our relay team is a little bit weakened right now because of the two Jamaican born athletes who have now retired,” Erbay said in an interview with CVM Sports.
The athletes he was referring to are Jak Ali Harvey and Emre Zafer Barnes.
Erbay noted that with the imminent retirement of 2017 World 200m champion Ramil Guliev, the country is in need of new names in the sprints and could continue to look to Jamaica to provide them.
“There desperately needs to be new names from the grassroots or recruited. They are very passionate about the 4x100m team,” he said.
Sportsmax.tv reported last Sunday that some of the country’s high-profile field event athletes were close to completing the process of switching allegiance and it was confirmed on Thursday by TVJ Sports that Olympic medallists Roje Stona and Rajindra Campbell had both completed the switch.
Later on Thursday, news broke that World Under-20 triple jump record holder Jaydon Hibbert would also me making the transition.
