Two Celtics starters trending upward after two-game absences

Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis took steps Tuesday toward returning to the court for Boston. Holiday (mallet finger) and Porzingis (illness) both participated in practice ahead of the Celtics’ Wednesday night matchup with the Portland Trail Blazers at TD Garden, according to head coach Joe Mazzulla. Both players missed Boston’s loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers last Friday and win over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday. “We went through a walkthrough, went through a film session,” Mazzulla said after practice when asked about Porzingis’ participation. “So he’s here.” As for Holiday, who wore a cast on his injured right pinky finger this past weekend, Mazzulla said the veteran guard was able to practice shooting during Tuesday’s session at the Auerbach Center. When he spoke with reporters ahead of Sunday’s game, Holiday said he hadn’t yet tried to catch a basketball “because of the pain” in his finger. “He was able to go through practice,” Mazzulla said. “He was able to go through his shooting routine. He was able to go through his individual workout. He was able to be with us the entire time.” Could Holiday suit up against Portland? “It’s a possibility,” Mazzulla said. “We’ll continue to see how he feels (Wednesday), how he feels at shootaround. But it’s definitely a possibility.” Holiday’s numbers are down across the board this season — especially his 3-point shooting, which has dipped from 42.9% a year ago to 34.2% — but the 34-year-old remains one of the Celtics’ most valuable defensive players. “Especially defensively, you feel like he’s always in the right position, just doing a lot of different things for us,” fellow guard Derrick White said after Sunday’s win. “So obviously, it’s different not having him out there, and we know he’s going to do whatever he needs to do to get back as quick as possible. Guys are just going to have to step up and try to make those plays. You can’t be a Jrue Holiday, but we can all just come together and just do a little bit more.” With 21 games remaining and the Celtics trending toward the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference — they trail first-place Cleveland by 7 1/2 games and a 3 1/2 games up on third-place New York — Mazzulla will look to avoid wearing down his key players before the playoffs, especially aging and banged-up ones like Holiday. “He’s always a guy who wants to be out there,” Mazzulla said of the 15th-year pro, Boston’s second-oldest player behind Al Horford. “At the same time, we have to do what’s best for him and what’s best for the team. It’s the second time in his career that he’s gone a long playoff run into an Olympics, so we’re fully aware of that, and I feel like he’s done a great job of when he’s available, giving everything he has. And at the same time, knowing how we can help him and make sure that he’s at his best when we need him to be. So it’s just having that balance and I think he’s done a great job of that.” Porzingis’ usage will be managed, as well. The starting center sat out three of the last four games due to illness after missing extended time with lower leg injuries early in the season. He and Horford also do not play both ends of back-to-backs, like the one Boston has this week against Portland and Philadelphia (Wednesday/Thursday). “The most important thing is winning,” Mazzulla said, “and the second most important thing is making sure our guys are healthy. So to me, it’s how do we put ourselves in position to win every night? And I think our guys know the ownership of that, regardless of who’s in, who’s out, there’s an expectation to deliver and there’s an expectation to win and we want to continue to do that. And there’s things we can continue to get better at on both ends of the floor as far as our execution and continuing to work on that, and at the same time making sure we’re feeling good and ready to go for the future.”
