Two Civilians Killed In Crossfire, Vigilante Vehicle Set Ablaze As Security Operatives Repel Coordinated Attacks In Aguata Axis

Gloria Anaeze Security forces led by the Anambra State Police Command, in the early hours of Tuesday, July 9, 2025, thwarted coordinated gun attacks at Oko and under the Ekwulobia Flyover in Aguata Local Government Area. One of the gunmen was demobilized in a fierce gun battle, while operatives recovered one AK-47 rifle, an automatic pump-action gun, and four suspected stolen vehicles at the scene. The vehicles recovered include: Red Toyota Camry (Reg No: ENU 58 SC) Custom-coloured Mercedes Benz GLK (no plate number) Golden Lexus 330 (Reg No: ENU 815 AP) Ash Toyota Highlander (Reg No: GDD 517 RW) According to the Anambra Police, the hoodlums had opened unprovoked fire under the Ekwulobia flyover, triggering a swift and decisive response from the Joint Security Team. Unfortunately, two innocent civilians were caught in the crossfire and died from gunshot wounds. A brown Toyota Sienna belonging to the Anambra State Vigilante Group was also torched during the chaos. In a related development, gunmen attempted an attack on the Oko Divisional Police Headquarters but were successfully repelled by alert officers on duty. No police casualties were recorded, and an aggressive manhunt for the fleeing attackers is ongoing. Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, MNIPS, PhD, has ordered heightened security deployments across the area to prevent further attacks. He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as operations continue to restore full normalcy. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incidents and assured that further updates will be communicated as investigations progress.
