Two Wales stars named in England's best team after leaving Welsh rugby

Wales internationals Tomos Williams and Nicky Smith have both been named in the 2024/25 Gallagher Premiership Rugby Team of the Season after impressive debut campaigns in England. Williams, who earlier this week was also named as the Premiership's Player of the Season, has torn it up for Gloucester since moving across the border from Cardiff last summer, crossing for nine tries and assisting many more. Despite Wales' struggles on the international stage, the 30-year-old's form has also earned him a place on the British & Irish Lions tour this summer. Smith, meanwhile, has been a key part of Leicester Tigers' push to the Premiership play-offs since joining from the Ospreys ahead of the season, establishing himself as one of the best scrummagers in the game and emerging as a potential Lions bolter. Both have now made the cut for the league's team of the season, which was chosen by an expert panel including the Rugby Players' Association's CEO Christian Day, the RPA's Head of Women's Rugby Rachael Burford, TV presenter Jill Douglas and former England and Lions star turned BBC and TNT Sports pundit Ugo Monye. Monye's TNT Sports colleagues Ali Eykyn, Claire Thomas and Nick Mullins made up the rest of the panel alongside the BBC's Chris Jones, The Times' Alex Lowe, The i's Hugh Godwin and Gavin Mairs of The Telegraph. Smith is included in a front row that also features Bath duo Tom Dunn and Thomas Du Toit, with Lions captain Maro Itoje packing down alongside Bristol Bears' Joe Batley in the engine room. There is an all-England back row with Bath's Ted Hill and Sale's Ben Curry named as flankers with Tom Willis of Saracens taking the number eight jersey. Williams then partners England star George Ford in the half-backs, with Bristol's Berhard Janse van Rensburg and Sale's Robert du Preez making up the centre combination. There is another Bristol and Sale duo on the flanks, with Gabriel Ibitoye and Tom Roebuck named on the wings while Williams' Gloucester team-mate Santi Carreras is handed the No.15 jersey. It comes after Williams beat Ford, du Toit and Willis - as well as Scotland star Finn Russell - to be named as the Premiership's player of the season, with the 65-cap international saying he was "very proud" of his achievement. "Coming from the players from each team, it means a lot," he said after lifting the award. "I'm really grateful and very proud. "I didn't know what to expect from this season. I came in open-minded and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. "I couldn't have picked a better club than Gloucester, and better coaches, they have been class. "It was the style of play that appealed," he added. That has shown through the season, they give us the freedom to play and express ourselves and I think that has benefited me and the boys."
