Oromia Global Forum (OGF) Urges Immediate International Action Amid Escalating Human Rights Violations Against Oromo Civilians in Ethiopia
June 9, 2025 - The Oromia Global Forum (OGF) urgently calls the attention of the international community, including the United Nations, African Union, European Union, United States Government, and global human rights organizations, to the escalating atrocities committed against Oromo civilians in Ethiopia under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s regime.
Recent reports from credible sources reveal a horrifying surge in targeted killings, arbitrary detentions, torture, and forced displacements carried out by Prosperity Party (PP) forces and affiliated militias across multiple zones in Oromia, including East Shawa, West Shawa, Qellem Wallagga, West Harargee, East Harargee, Arsi, East Wallagga, and West Wallagga.
Since Abiy Ahmed came to power in 2018, the Oromo people have endured unprecedented levels of state-sponsored violence. According to the Oromia Support Group (OSG), over 6,419 Oromo civilians have been killed by early April 2025 and the number is growing, while thousands remain unlawfully detained, tortured, or disappeared. These atrocities echo the horrors of the Tigray War (2020-2022) and carry haunting echoes of the Rwandan genocide, yet the international community remains conspicuously silent.
Recent incidents include the extrajudicial execution of a pregnant mother of two, Aadde Alemnash Dassaaleny, in Sayyoo district, Riphaa Guutee Soyama village, on May 7, 2025. The same week, PP militias also murdered two innocent men, Sharif Kamal and Abdulsalam Aliyi, in Canqo village, Qellem Wallagga Zone. Reports further indicate mass detentions in Guto Gida, East Wallagga, where Mr. Maraba Tasfa and Mr. Gurmessa Tasfa were abducted from their homes on May 13, 2025, solely based on their Oromo identity. They are currently facing severe mistreatment in custody. Further, the regime forces killed two youth in East Shawa zone named Badhane Bula on June 1st, 2025 while another unidentified person was killed by regime forces in Maqi town south east of the capital. More people were reported killed by the regime West Shawa and Malka Ballo district in East Hararghe zone. In addition to the Ethiopian government, Fano Amhara militants operating in Oromia including in Wallo zones of Oromia are commiting inhumane crimes against Oromo civilians. Early June 2025, this group killed over 4 Oromo civilians including Kalif Bayan Abadir, Ibrahim Ali, Junaid Abdulah, and Yusuf Abdi in Abe Dongoro district, Horo Guduru Wallaga zone of Oromia. This group conducts regular raids on vulnerable Oromo civilians committing horrifying crimes with impunity.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia is experiencing severe economic hardship, characterized by runaway inflation, widespread poverty, and a nationwide uprising of healthcare professionals protesting against unlivable wages. Despite these widespread suffering and crises, Abiy Ahmed’s regime continues to divert scarce resources to extravagant city beautification projects, lavish military campaigns, and personal vanity projects, further exacerbating the suffering of millions of Ethiopians.
OGF condemns these ongoing human rights violations in the strongest terms and calls for:
An immediate cessation of atrocities against Oromo civilians.
Independent, international investigations into these crimes.
Accountability under international human rights laws, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR).
Targeted sanctions against Ethiopian government officials responsible for orchestrating and perpetuating these crimes.
Targeted sanctions against Fano militants that commit terrorist crimes against vulnerable Oromo civilians in Oromia
It is imperative that global leaders take decisive action to prevent further bloodshed and to ensure that those responsible for the systematic atrocities against Oromo civilians are brought to justice.
The international community must not remain silent. Inaction will only embolden further violence. The time to act is now to protect innocent lives and uphold the universal principles of justice, dignity, and human rights.
