US Authorities Halt Search for Texas Flood Victims Amid New Flood Warnings
@Source: qna.org.qa
Washington, July 13 (QNA) - US authorities announced today the suspension of search operations for victims of the devastating floods that recently struck central Texas, as renewed warnings were issued over the potential for rising water levels due to continued heavy rainfall. This marks the first time that a new severe weather system has forced a halt to search efforts since the floods began in early July. Fire officials in the Ingram area of Kerr County have ordered the immediate evacuation of the Guadalupe River corridor until further notice, warning of the risk of an extremely high flash flood. Despite the suspension of some operations, search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate those still missing after the July 4 floods, which left at least 129 people dead and more than 170 unaccounted for. With heavy rains falling again today, meteorologists at the National Weather Service warned that the Guadalupe River could rise to approximately 15 feet (4.6 meters), about five feet above the official flood stage, posing a serious threat to infrastructure such as the Highway 39 bridge near the town of Hunt. An official warning from the agency stated: "Numerous secondary roads and bridges are flooded and have become extremely dangerous." On July 4, just before dawn, the Guadalupe River experienced a sudden and destructive rise of 26 feet (8 meters) in just 45 minutes, sweeping away homes and vehicles across the region. Since then, rescue teams have been using helicopters, boats, and drones to search for victims and evacuate individuals stranded in trees or isolated campsites cut off by collapsed roads. (QMA)
