U.S. Open Winner's Game 'Worst I've Ever Played,' Turns Corner at RBC Heritage
@Source: newsweek.com
Just two years ago, it seemed like Matthew Fitzpatrick was destined to be one of the stars in pro golf for years to come.Fitzpatrick had an excellent 2023 season to back up his 2022 U.S. Open victory at The Country Club of Brookline. He won the RBC Heritage in 2023 and finished in the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings.Fast-forward two years, and Fitzpatrick still hasn't found the winner's circle since that triumph at Harbour Town Golf Links 24 months ago. He didn't qualify for the Tour Championship after a 2024 season that saw him finish in the top 10 just three times.He hasn't been able to return to form so far in 2025, either. Fitzpatrick comes into the RBC Heritage without a top 20 finish and with three missed cuts in eight starts this season.He didn't hold back on his form so far this year, via Alan Bastable of Golf.com."It's rubbish, simple as that," Fitzpatrick said. "It's been awful. Yeah, it's been the worst I've ever played, in fact."The Englishman did respond nicely in his first round at Harbour Town, shooting a 5-under 66 on Thursday to sit in the top 20 and set himself up nicely to contend. He followed that up with a 1-under 70 on Friday and is T-13 entering the weekend.The top of the RBC Heritage leaderboard is full of big names and talented players such as Justin Thomas, who tied the course record on Thursday, and Scottie Scheffler. So, it will likely take a couple of low rounds on Saturday and Sunday for Fitzpatrick to contend for the title.Regardless of whether he can threaten for the Plaid Jacket, Fitzpatrick appears to b turning a corner this week and has a great chance to continue building confidence as he prepares for the PGA Championship in less than a month's time.More Golf: Scottie Scheffler Furiously Slams Club at RBC Heritage in Frustration
