USPS plans summer shipping rate hike as part of 10-year plan

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Postal Service is proposing new shipping rates set to take effect July 13, with increases aimed at supporting investments under its decade-long “Delivering for America” transformation plan. According to a filing submitted to the Postal Regulatory Commission this week, the proposed changes include a 6.3% hike for Priority Mail; a 7.1% increase for USPS Ground Advantage; and a 7.6% jump for Parcel Select. Prices for Priority Mail Express, international services and other extra services will remain unchanged, USPS said. Postal officials said the increases are necessary to maintain reliability while modernizing aging infrastructure and investing in long-term service improvements. The USPS Board of Governors approved the proposed adjustments earlier this week. “These pricing actions are part of a balanced approach under our 10-year ‘Delivering for America plan,’” USPS said in a statement. “They support our $40 billion investment in people, technology and infrastructure to ensure we continue delivering affordable, reliable service nationwide.” Unlike first-class mailing rates, which are tied to the consumer price index, shipping rates are set based on market conditions, USPS said. The “Delivering for America” plan, introduced in 2021, aims to overhaul the Postal Service’s operations, improve service reliability and return the organization to financial sustainability, USPS said. Among its goals is six-day-a-week nationwide delivery and increased investments in modern logistics. The Postal Regulatory Commission will review the proposed pricing before they are finalized, USPS said. Kaylee Remington is a trending news and metro reporter for cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer.
