Valero Texas Open: Matt Wallace Puts 'Big Boy Pants On' Next to Jordan Spieth
@Source: newsweek.com
Matt Wallace made a run during the second round of the Valero Texas Open that saw him climb 16 spots on the leaderboard. The Englishman enters the weekend in a tie for third place with a score of 7-under.After his day's performance, Wallace revealed that one of his inspirations for continuing a solid performance at the event is the memory of what Jordan Spieth did there in 2021."Yeah, yeah. I mean, having good results in the past, and playing with Jordan in '21 Saturday and Sunday and kind of being there with him, I kind of know how you need to play this golf course. And you need to play it well, that's pretty much it.""You need to play it how he played it that week, which was really good. Putting nicely. Yeah, I'm trying to stay on that same trend and hit the ball well and see some putts go in."Wallace also acknowledged that TPC San Antonio, venue of the event, is a course he likes very much because of its challenging fairways:"I just love it." he said. "I love how it makes you anxious on the tee, I love how it tightens you up, I love how you have to hit good shots. I'd say a complete opposite to last week where it's wide and you can miss loads of fairways and still be OK going into the greens, whereas here if you miss fairways, you better put your big pants on."The Englishman witnessed Spieth's victory firsthand at the 2021 Valero Texas Open, playing in the same group for the final two rounds. Wallace finished third in that edition, four shots behind the winner.On Friday, the Hillingdon, England, native carded five birdies and a bogey on the front nine for a 4-under round. Though it looked like he might go really low in the score, he went on to make par on the first seven holes on the back nine and only made his sixth birdie of the day on the 17th. Another par on the 18th sealed his 5-under 67 for the round.This is the fourth edition of the Valero Texas Open for Matt Wallace. He tied for third in 2021, missed the cut in 2022 and tied for 28th in 2023.Wallace will play the third round in a group with Ryo Hisatsune and Sam Ryder. His tee time will be 12:39 p.m. Eastern Time.More Golf: Texas Open: Sam Ryder WD from Pro-Am Citing Injury, Then Shoots 63 to Lead
