White, 35, had announced he would walk away from Test rugby at the end of the British and Irish Lions series, which the Wallabies concluded with a win in Sydney.
But Gordon’s hamstring injury opened the door for White to travel again as part of coach Joe Schmidt’s 35-player squad, with uncapped Ryan Lonergan joining Tate McDermott as other scrumhalf options.
After a concussion to flyhalf Tom Lynagh, Schmidt has named Tane Edmed in the squad with another pair of uncapped players Corey Toole and prop Aidan Ross.
Despite not seeing any action during the Lions series, veteran playmaker James O’Connor has held on to his spot for the tour.
Western Force hooker Brandon Paenga-Amosa has been added to the group, having answered a late call ahead of the final Lions Test after injuries to David Porecki and Matt Faessler last Thursday.
Porecki also announced his retirement from professional rugby earlier this week.
Queensland trio Josh Flook, Josh Nasser and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto are the other three new faces confirmed in the squad, while Filipo Daugunu will remain in Australia for the impending birth of his child.
“It’s pleasing to be able to keep the core of the group together while also leaning on some depth and fresh bodies,” Schmidt said, with the tour coming on the back of three tough Tests against the Lions.
“We’re very conscious of how difficult it is going to be, playing South Africa on their home turf over two consecutive weekends.
“The group has made some positive steps throughout the start of the Test season, but we all know there is a lot of hard work ahead of us.”
The Wallabies will play two Tests in South Africa, the first in Johannesburg and then another in Cape Town a week later.
The squad will assemble in Sydney on Friday before departing for Johannesburg early Saturday morning.
