Virgin Media O2 unveils cheaper way to give customers more to watch - but it comes at bad time for some

Virgin Media is ramping up its offerings for UK sports enthusiasts , having confirmed the addition of Premier Sports Rugby to its lineup for existing Premier Sports subscribers. The telecom and TV provider has now unveiled an enticing deal for access to the three-channel bundle that includes Premier Sports 1, Premier Sports 2, and Premier Sports Rugby. For those keen to trial these channels, a subscription is currently available at a discounted rate of just £10 per month for the initial three months, compared to the standard tariff of £15.99. Subscribers will gain full access to a range of sporting content such as the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup (renamed Premier Sports Cup), La Liga, Copa del Rey, Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup, United Rugby Championship, TOP14, Ice Hockey, Coppa Italia, among other events. These channels are accessible on devices like TiVo, V6 or Virgin TV 360, with Virgin advising customers to review their offers online, reports the Express . "We're always looking to give our customers added value, and hot off the heels of a brand new 24/7 rugby channel launching, we're offering sports fans the chance to tune in to Premier Sports for a little less with a special offering exclusively for Virgin TV customers," David Bouchier, Chief TV and Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media O2, said. Virgin Media subscribers can look forward to accessing three new sports channels, consisting of Premier Sports 1 on channel 551, Premier Sports 2 on 552, and Premier Sports Rugby on channel 553, at no additional cost. A spokesperson went on: "We know sport is a huge passion point for a lot of our customers, so it's fantastic to be able to bring them closer to the action while helping them save a little extra, too." The expansion comes on the heels of an unwelcome 7.5 per cent price hike, which Virgin justified by pointing out a 10 per cent surge in broadband usage on its network last year. The company went on: "We know that price changes are never welcome, but with broadband usage on our network up by nearly 10 per cent last year, we continue to provide excellent value for connectivity that our customers are relying on more than ever before." Elsewhere, Virgin Media O2 has confirmed it will switch off one of its mobile services next month, which could leave some customers without data access. The mobile phone giant, made up of Virgin Media's broadband network and O2's mobile network, will see its 3G services go dark in April. The network switch off will begin next month, with Durham, England the first area affected. The switch-off is also set to impact other mobile providers which use Virgin Media O2's network, including Giffgaff, Sky Mobile, and Tesco Mobile. The telecommunications company said in a statement: "3G has been superseded by 4G and 5G networks over recent years, with the 3G network carrying less and less traffic. "By focusing our investment on 4G and 5G, we’ll be able to further expand and upgrade services. And it means you’ll be able to benefit from quicker download speeds and higher quality voice calls."
